“🎶 The Days of Wine and Roses” … I play that along with “Misty” and “When Sunny Gets Blue” all in the Rocker’s key of E!

Love that! I am trying to use open keys like E A D more often. Ive spent so long in Eb, F, and Bb that I forget how much the guitar can really shine with those open strings

I know it’s a sin but I want to be able to use that low open E rather than being forced to use Eb and F. I did learn them in their proper keys but then I experimented. Joe Pass warns against using keys like E too often; he states, correctly, that you’ll tire and bore the audience. I play those 3 tunes, one after the other, all in E but I wouldn’t do any more tunes in E after that. Gotta go … I’m driving 2.5 hours to see a couple of D-28’s. Wish me luck!

Leo you must have great musical memory. Question. Do you always play a particular song the same way each time, or does it change a lot as you play? Thanks for the upload. I enjoyed this.

I usually just have one chorus worked out for each tune and use it as a safe place to land when I get myself lost improvising. I take a lot of risks when recapitulating the melody and changes, and that lets me play music I could never plan or write ahead of time. It can feel boring to me if I work things out too much.

@@LeoJohnsonTrio Sounds like a good plan Leo. Stick with it and keep up the good work. And thanks for posting your music on You Tube.
