Thank you this was very helpful. Just putting the bebop note in one simple harmonic scale was such a great place to start while everyone else was so confusing. It’s amazing to just learn one position of a scale and immediately begin to improvise in order to learn. I have a question for you if you’re around. I’ve had a lot of trouble finding out information on soloing in Cuban music. I have found that using the bepop note as a passing tone, as well as adding a blues flat 5 to the scale, gives me all the tools I need for Cuban sounding soloing. It seems to work for Gypsy Jazz too pretty well. Is this called something, and why can’t I find anything on it? Harmonic minor scale, adding a blues flat 5 and the bepop note.

to my ears If you play this scale over a minor7 chord it sound more like an aeolian bebop scale because the extra note is a major 7 on the upbeat so in the case of harmonic minor sound you should add the extra note to a different place because the chord tones are 1-b3-5-7(major seven not minor)

So I can only play the bepop harmonic if the 5th dominant or major chord is being use or I can play it all I want even without playing the 5th chord. Sorry for the question I just want to learn

A harmonic minor has 7 notes For example the Am harmonic Has Am B C Dm E F G# So the Em will become E dominant or E major because of the because of the raised 7th degree, so would I only use the this bepop harmonic minor if I’m in the 5th chord or I could just use it as a passing tone?

If you harmonize the A-harmonic-minor scale by stacking 3rds you get on the 5th position E7. There is no Em involved. If you want to play over a dominant-7 chord then there are other scales to be used. Harmonic Minor sounds best over Am.

Hey Maple you can play it over the 1 minor chord
