Your studio has a cozy vibe. Are you in an apartment building? Is there good sound isolation so your neighbors are happy?

Thanks! Trying to keep it cozy! We're in the basement of a pre-war brick building, there's sound insulation everywhere, and our neighbors are awesome.

when you play, are you always aware of the chord tone you are on or where you are going? btw, thanks you so much for the videos!

I think it’s a little different for everyone, but for me, all this theory becomes sounds in my imagination, and I can follow those sounds intuitively and spontaneously. If you stopped me in the middle of a solo and asked me to explain what I was doing, I could tell you what note I was playing on what chord, but in the moment of improvising, I’m trying to create melodies intuitively. The goal of these exercises is to help you to hear the sounds of the chords as they move through the progression so that you can eventually play through them intuitively. The hardest part of improvising in this video was forcing myself to stick to the exercises rather than following my melodic intuition, but the more you practice these kinds of exercises, the more the theory just becomes sounds that you can freely use. Put another way, the third of the ii chord just sounds like the third of the ii chord, and you can use it if it gets you to where you’re going in the moment. Hope that helps!

Can we get a pdf with the comping pattern the piano player is playing ? Would be helpful for those wanting to learn how to comp like this.

It seemes on your PDF that the Phrygian dominant scale has no b9.

Woops! Good catch! Fixed it! That's what I get for writing theory charts at 2am. Download the new PDF, throw away the old one, and don't tell anybody I messed up one of my favorite modes.

I am enjoying this series, I feel alittle overwhelmed in this one though, too many scales for me...
