Күн бұрын

This month, the New Orleans jazz legend and patriarch Ellis Marsalis died at age 85 after contracting coronavirus. In a heartfelt conversation about grief and the healing power of music, Walter Isaacson speaks with Ellis’ son Wynton - a jazz legend in his own right - about losing his father, what he thinks Ellis’ legacy will be and how jazz can help us all right now.
Originally aired on April 21, 2020.

I was so moved by this piece and by hearing the mournful emotion behind Wynton's trumpet at the end. Thank you for allowing me into such an intimate moment and letting me release some of my own grief into those notes.

If only the world had more Black Patriarchs like Ellis Marsalis, just imagine how many black communities would be mentally, educationally, socially and spiritually prosperous! #Beautiful & Royal Marsalis legacy.

So sad for your loss Mr. Marsalis. My father lived until age 74. You are a great inspiration to me and I play your jazz music for my students to listen to while creating their artwork. Sunflowers is a MASTERPIECE!!! What a beautiful story about your father and what he taught to you! My condolences and prayers to you and your family.

These zoom conversations are incredible..I almost enjoy these more than a studio interview....and I I can't help but noticing that our great intellectuals, thinkers, innovators have a common decor -- a library. Americans need to hit the books ; pick up an instrument, join a community theater, take an art class
