I highly, highly recommend watching both the Italian ARMY explanation video and the English Explanation video. If you have to just pick one I would go with the English one, because although the Italian one goes into waaay more detail about the Sewol ferry disaster and the ensuing political upheaval, and makes you really feel how devastating this event really was (bring tissues), it only touches on some of the symbolism in the music video such as the snowpiercer reference, that are examined in much more detail in the English version. Plus I tend to agree with some of the explanations in the English video than a few of the hypothesis in the Italian one. One thing they both agree on though is that Spring day is a song about hope. It’s not that grief can happen in the Spring it’s that winter is the metaphor for grief and one day Spring will come and our grief will be over. It’s saying, right now I’m going through something really difficult and sad, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. BTS ALWAYS wants to encourage their listeners to be hopeful.

The Italian army one touches on all the same symbolism as the bulletproof vibes one...she just has different opinions regarding what it stands for. She addresses literally all the same scenes and theories for them, though. I don't know why people keep saying she doesn't. If anything, the Italian army one actually goes into *more* detail regarding the symbolism of various things in the MV.
@amiii52923 жыл бұрын
I prefer the italian army version way more. It is more detailed and she also mentions the book and the movie. In my opinion she links these things with the tragedy way better and her research is way more profound. On top of that, she shows real time footage. I‘m not surprised that she was invited to korea because of her research regarding this theme.

So happy that you've both reacted to probably my favourite of their songs. Spring Day is so special to me. I understand that they wrote the song because they realised that moving to Seoul and becoming famous had lost them old friends and then it's the MV that references the Sewol Ferry disaster. Because of the political situation in Korea at the time artists had to be very careful not to show public support for all the families who lost their children. Be prepared when you watch any explanation videos or stories about the sinking, it's absolutely heart breaking.

when i saw the notification im like, WOW andrew and caitlin went to the hardcore song this time. even without knowing the background of the song, the tone of the MV and the lyrics is already so meaningful and to think it was written in part and sang by pretty much youngsters and they deliver it so well i think is why even for new army spring day is classic. and then realizing that this song is pretty much about a tragic event the government tried to hide and pretty much banned every artist to even talk or sing about, speak so much why we love BTS. it wasnt about blame or anger but respecting the memories of those who died and griving for their loss. but like i said, even if you dont know the back story of this song, this song is relatable because we all went through grief and sorrow at some point in our lives.

An explanation video is really important. I hope it will be the one by Bulletproof vibes because it breaks down the actual video and gives you insight to Sewol. In my mind this may be the most important work of art from BTS. It has significant meaning, socially, culturally, emotionally and has a reference to literature. It is about loss, mourning, regret and hope. And his linked to a specific and tragic event. It is treasured, respected and revered by ARMY and citizens in the Republic of Korea. I rarely get past Jin in the stairwell without crying. His representation in particular just breaks my heart. And I've seen this MV many times. It crosses borders, language and age barriers. This songs means the world to me. This is when BTS went from a band thought was great to an actual fan=ARMY. 10 years ago my best friend throughout my childhood was in a car accident, went into a come for a few months and barely survived. My friend has permanent brain damage, can barely speak and can't recognize me. I struggled for such a long time with feeling relieved and happy that she survived, yet not being able to mourn the loss of my friend - bc the person I knew no longer existed. Discovering this song just hit a very personal spot for me. If you haven't yet watched the explanation, I just want to warn you that it is hard and sad to watch - especially the one by Italian ARMY. But I still watch it from time to time, bc I feel like it holds such important messages and in a way is like a beacon of hope to. Hope bc so many are speaking up and supporting each other - and BTS who chose to risk their carreers bc this was more important. So I recommend Kleenex, maybe a blanket, some light and time to recover afterwards and lots of hugs and kisses afterwards.

The 'please stay a little while longer' in the lyrics could also be taken from the perspective of the one that has passed, saying 'keep living a while longer, as one thing that people experiencing loss experience is the desire to join the person in the afterlife. So its like the person is saying 'hold on a while longer' and there is like a reply to the line with 'how much longer must I wait, to see you, to meet you?' Spring is used as a metaphor for things will get better after this cold and lonely "winter" [winter being the mourning and loss phase] - its a hopeful song about how the sadness and pain of loss will eventually lessen and get better, winter will turn into spring. It might not feel like it will end, but hold on and it will get better. BTS has so many songs to comfort and support their fans and just people in general, Spring Day is a queen of the Korean Charts. They also have 2, 3 and Magic Shop dedicated to their fans, so I recommend those ones as well (if you haven't already done them)
@almostpsych3 жыл бұрын
This song is art. I do not know of any other song in the history of popular music that would be so powerful and meaningful. I honestly think that this is the side of BTS that sets them apart and explains their appeal. If it had to be one song to sum it all up and get them remembered by, it would be "the queen" (as Army calls it) Spring Day.
@princesamarulina3 жыл бұрын
Thank you again! And thank you for telling that you'll watch Italian Army's explanation. This song never left the Melon charts in Korea since its debut, 4 years ago, and they've been using the metaphor of "when the spring comes" to talk about the end of pandemic. BUT I wish you could react to the choreo too. There are 3 songs that you already reacted to that have choreographies that tell stories in itself, and paint the song the same way you show that they do with the chords, instruments and singing style: Fake Love, Black Swan and Spring Day. They sing this way while performing those dramatic (in a sense of theatrical) moves. Now that you know the three, with their meanings, I wish that you could watch them even if you don't think that you would be interested in dance, because... because they put their whole bodies in transmitting the story even if you don't understand the language, and they are amazing doing it. In Spring Day, the duo Suga/Jimin as friends connected but far away, the way someone appears and disappears, they embodying the snow flakes, the smoke, the falling petals, (the waves and the ferry? This reference is for after the explanation video). There are many different performances of each of those songs, even dance practices, and camera work is not always the best, maybe you can ask for votes or linka suggestions.

The song is so important, that’s why everyone wants you to watch the explanation videos. One by XCelest explaining the video and the one by Italian Army explaining the political aspects. This will give a better understanding of one of the worst moments in modern day Korea. The Army video is fast be prepared to pause to read. On a side note it just so happened that this song timed with the accident, it was written by Suga and RM discussing list of someone loved in death but it took on a different meaning when the ferry went down. It also shows that BTS was not afraid to speak up against the wrong that occurred even though it was the government. That took courage. The song at its core though is beautifully written and beautifully preformed. It is haunting and yet comforting. 💜💜

This is another song that just blows me away. It’s so deeply emotional and has helped me lately through some very big losses in our family. I can’t even explain it but it seems to acknowledge the pain and grief of loss but also offer solace and hope. The MV may be one of the most significant meaningful works of art a music video has offered that I have seen. Layers and layers of meaning, the ideas of the movie Snowpiercer and the book “the ones who walk away from Omelas” both meant a lot to me before I saw this and together they are soo socially significant to include and that is just two very minor details. With the backdrop of the political backlash to do anything related to Sewol and threat of being put on the govt black list… it’s a subtle brave piece of art and I both cry and find hope it has helped the victims families. Using a platform like theirs to do things like this are why fans become a bit intense. Thank you for the insight and thoughtful analysis.

Spring Day is sad... it's a melancholy that wrap your bones like chill winter breeze... I get chills everytime I hear Suga's rap in this song... his style going from sad to aggressive is so relatable feeling in grief... being sad for the lose to being angry why that happened... "blaming you hurt less than missing you"... I feel that line in my core. And yes, it is Jimin who is harmonising with Suga in Suga's verse.

When you watch the explanation video this song will hit you 10 times harder due to the heartbreaking tragedy that inspired it. And the video has even more symbolism than you thought. "Spring Day" is a masterpiece. It makes me think of my Mom & best feiend who died too young. I miss them every day.

i think another thing interesting about that switch from major to the minor 7 is that it almost feels like that first "please stay" is a genuine plea, but as it switches to the minor 7, you start to lose hope a little bit. "please stay a little longer," but you know in the back of your head that they won't come back.

Glad to see Caitlin back (Hi Caitlin!). You've probably already heard this in other comments,... but you must have had the feeling that there was something in the MV that you didn't quite grasp. Yess. There is. There are 2 expanation videos for this MV, Both are well done but here are the differences. 1. Explanation by Bulletproof Vibes. Excellently and clearly organized. Illustrates literary and artistic references. Gives an overview of the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. 2. Explanation by Italian Army: briefly mentions literary and artistic references. Gives in-depth details of the ferry tragedy including on-site interviews with witnesses. It is gut-wrenching but not as well-organized as #1. Most ARMYs have watched both of them. I highly recommend watching them in the order above.

When you correctly guessed Jimin was singing with Suga, I did that proud ARMY nod (we all do it sometimes lol). Off that is it your reactions that have changed (gotten better) or is that your know them better (this is me consciously attempting to echo Suga’s verse and acknowledge this awesome reaction)? Hard to tell but I loved this reaction, especially Caitlin’s points:)

I was crying by the end, though Spring Day consistently gets to me. It also has this nostalgic vibe that means no matter how sad, it’s welcome like the memories of loved ones. I stopped crying when the sax kicked in while you were talking at the end because my puggle Porter has an affinity for wind instruments and he jumped up and started running around at that moment. (His nickname is View Halloo which I know from Mary Poppins but it’s what is used in fox hunting when a fox is sighted, but that’s just how he reacts to horns.)

I really enjoyed this reaction and I love the music theory breakdowns! All the editing you do at the beginning is so cute. As always you both bring a really interesting perspective to these videos. I will say about the explanation videos, they are often very good and very well done, but they are really just fan theories. The boys themselves do NOT have any real creative control over the music video staging, storyline and production and RM (who wrote the majority of the lyrics) has said that this song is not about about any event or even a particular loss but that it was written more in a generalized sense of loss he felt as old friendships disappeared. But I personally find this song to be an excellent representation of grief for losses both big and small. The music video is really what those theory video's are discussing but a lot of times I think people come away from them assuming that the song was written specifically about those things or that the boys wanted the music video to tell a particular story and that's not the case. The theory videos are a great way to gain a different lens on what they can mean. I especially like the one that discusses how the video references the story "The One's Who Walk Away from Omelas". I find the way different literature is interwoven in some of their music videos adds a really interesting layer to the viewing experience and I imaging that is what the production team was hoping for.
@Mark-vj7zd3 жыл бұрын
As someone in the film industry, this is something that interests me greatly. Are there videos where the boys or BigHit actually talk about the creative process behind the videos? I can certainly see responsibility for generating MV concepts and then realising them would fall to people outside the group. It’s highly specialised work and BTS themselves have plenty else to do, but I would have expected them to have quite significant input once the initial draft concepts are developed. After all, the songs come first so the MVs need to reflect the intent of those stories. I also wonder what input they had into generating the BU storylines. From what Suga has said about rejecting the initial MV proposal for Daechwita and asking for something much more lavish in scope, content, historicity and as a consequence, budget, it appears that he had considerable control. I think that was post signing the new contracts, so things had possibly changed, but I wonder what the earlier situation was, and what the current one is. To my eye their ‘acting’ in all the music videos is so on point that I assume they were always fully aware of and engaged in the stories they’re telling visually.
@mackenzief.55203 жыл бұрын
@@Mark-vj7zd The best source I would say is absolutely the behind the scenes making videos of the music videos themselves. For older videos (like up until boy with love I think) you'll have to use the Bangtan Subs videos unless you speak Korean, because BigHit doesn't have subs I believe. These are also nice because the team subbing them often includes cultural notes/references,. As with all translated content recommendations I will emphasize that translation is an art not a science and there is always a bias involved. Another greats source is when they do the reaction videos to their music videos and you can see how genuinely surprised by the things happening in the video. I think for the most part the boy's are given notes about any music video story line and their acting I think has always been good, but especially for BU it doesn't seem based on the behind the scenes that they had any input on the story line. I think to put the what came first the song or the video into perspective you also have to consider that there album concepts seem to be given to them in groups (so the wings/hyyh albums or love yourself albums) and they should really be seen as one large story/concept playing out over 3-4 albums worth of content. So in reality the boys are likely given a theme asked to submit music that could work with that, and then the music videos are planned around that. And many of there title songs are worked on by multiple members but most are not written or composed by them specifically. RM and Suga being the most prominently credited on there actual album writing and production. This has been consistent all the way up to BE which was a complete break from normal BigHit form because it was unplanned, and the boys wanted to be more hands on in the process. However even in the On music video behind the scenes they mentioned having no idea what the storyline was about, just a vague concept. For the Wings album solos I know in their album notes the translations I have read suggested that they were asked to write personal solos but that they should try to fit them within a certain theme, and then the storyline was adjusted to incorporate them where necessary. And I believe if I remember correctly Taehyung implied that his was entirely based on the story line from I Need You and not really personal at all. I think the Dechewita video is a rare exception specifically because it was a solo work and Yoongi was paying for it, so he had complete control. I imagine in general they have more say in solo work videos than in full band production. Hope that response wasn't to long and that it made some sense. Writing it on my phone on a long train ride so I apologize for any errors.

Agreed! Overall, I think the Italian one is definitely the better explanation. But it is so chock-full of info that the English one is much easier to digest for someone who is not yet familiar with what exactly happened. That‘s why I‘d also recommend watching both. First the English one to get a general idea of what‘s going on, then the Italian one to really, properly understand what happened in the tragedy and how it is reflected in the video. Andrew and Kaitlyn (probably misspelled? Sorry about that!), if you‘re reading this: Please don‘t be afraid to react to both and make it a very long video. Armys will watch it, we don‘t mind. I would love you react to the explanation(s) videos, no matter how long… The song itself can be interpreted however one would like but the Music Video is THEORIZED to be about the tragedy (however backed up by a lot of evidence)… Their are two explanation videos. Different people like different ones…they are similar but different. 1) by bulletproof vibes 3) by Italian Army (I prefer this one) (it goes in more detail about the tragedy) (she does speak fast so feel free to pause, rewind, or slow the video down if you react to it) Suga and RM wrote this song thinking about their friend(s). Suga also talks about this friend in another one of his songs, I believe in his second mixtape. Anyways sorry for long comment. Lol

@@AndrewBergSax I would recommend watching both of those explanation videos, even if you only react to one (or neither). Preferably start with the Bulletproof Vibes one, followed by the Italian Army version (which goes further into the disaster and its aftermath but requires a lot more pauses due to the speed of delivery). If you have anything left after those, there’s a video by xceleste called something like ‘What you still don’t know about Spring Day’ which is truly harrowing. One note, which has already been mentioned. The song is not just about Sewol; RM and Suga wrote it initially when missing friends and family. It evolved from there.

This song was actually inspired by an event that happened in Korea and the song almost got banned and if you watched the dance practice for the song you will see them forming a boat that represents the Ferry that sunk the same year that they wrote the song it was a big tragedy for everyone in Korea since so many were lost, when V sings his line “you know it all your my best friend” that’s when they form the boat as if they are saying goodbye it is very emotional

I really appreciated your reactions. I've never seen anyone else pick up on the things you both expanded on, and I have watched dozens of reactions! So again, well done. 🏆🏆 That "propulsion" that kind of cries in the background of the song, sounds like a wail and a siren without being overly disturbing. I am amazed by it. Great 30 Second Music Theory this time! What an interesting application to this song. The attention to detail while they're writing the song is beautiful! SUGA - Dude, Andrew, you have really picked out his style. He has other styles, of course, but these are definitely his 2 main styles IMO. How you picked out his aggression turning on when Jimin's BGV goes away... Wow. I am blown away. What an artistic expression of grief when that special person in our lives goes away. Thank you for enriching my experience with this special song. I feel like Spring Day is the gift that keeps on giving. P.S. Hopefully it won't get too heated over the explanation video choice in the comments... But I know since at this point you are ARMY (👍🏻), you'll continue learning about the song and the MV. I completely agree about the wail. It immediately tells you something is off without being overwhelming. How did you like the visuals on the 30 Second Music Theory? Did they make sense? Watching it back I wasn't sure if I made a clear enough connection that the "one note" that changed is the note they were singing and that that's why I think it sounds so pleading at the end. So one thing I really think that helps is looking through the lyrics first. I immediately interpreted the song as the stages of grief so I was kind of looking for how they would handle that musically. When I heard Jimin cut out and Suga kick it into high gear I was like 😳 here we go! Oh and I'd say it's probably 50/50 on the explanation video to pick on here, but I know I'll end up watching both when I'm emotionally ready 😅
