I've liked "Them Changes" since I was about 13 yrs. old (now 62). Hendix and the Band of Gypsies did it on their album, and it's killer! "Polarity" is so good, the playing on "How long..." is so lush and sensitive, really a nice touch by two masters.

I first heard it on KUVO out of Denver..the late great Bob Parlocha played "Emily" one night late on his syndicated show..I didn't even know the album had been done..called my dad and told him about it,he said "yeah jase! I got it last month when it was released!"..always ahead of me.

Yeah, had that record too!!! Thanks for another memory! Hurricane Katrina took out a thousand albums and a whole studio where my home "used to be". (That became a common expression around the Gulf coast.) Been retrieving treasures ever since, wherever I can.

How did I not know about Polarity until today? It’s been playing non-stop on my back porch all day. An example of two masters collaborating rather than having a pissing contest. Truly a tasteful recording. This album should be celebrated more widely.

What a gift..that Satin Doll lesson. We like to use the phrase My Pleather Doll, for no particular reason. Funny how you went from jazz snob at the beginning to stench mouth at the end. I took a pic of the grammy jazz winners (no way can I watch these shows) in my newspaper today to look them up. And anyone who wins a top pop award, I'll at least look them up on youtube to see if something is there...either in their voice, or the producer's chops. But I hear the horror in the cafe's I frequent. Autotune songs that sound like they're for little kids. Like post Disney kids now 14, so here ya go. They're doing calisthenics instead of real singing. Depressing when you start thinking...well, I don't have that much time left..I won't have to suffer long. It just ain't our party anymore. But who in pop now is the real deal? Or rather, who is the real deal who isn't a jazz singer? Joanna Newson's Milk Eyed Mender showed genius. Tom Waits should be up there on Mount Rushmore, along with Abby Lincoln and Oscar Levant and Jonathan Winters. David Sylvian is a true artist. A real poet and a producing genius. So, Jimmy, were you a fan of Jerry Reed's guitar playing?

I am in your online school, I have played for around 40 years but have never received lessons, and I like the sound of barring across all the strings to make what I think is a minor 11 of the note on the last string, and also just the 6th, 4th, 2nd or 1st, 3rd, 5th string to make 2 other minor chords, I land on these because to me they sound good and are very easy to play, also barring with the first two and last two strings up 1 fret, but other guitar players I know dislike these sounds. Am I wrong? Are these unpleasant like nails on a caulk board? I have been doing it so long perhaps I am used to it?

Nobody has the answer for you! Listen to yourself playing those chords: do you like the sound? If you do, great, but also what are some other chords that have a different feeling to them? If you don’t, why don’t you try finding something else? Most peoples biggest hindrance in being self -taught is a reluctant, unclear, sense of taste.

Jimmy what's this thing with "Borrowed Chords" ? I saw this chart some guy put up with 48 chords for one key. Why not just say it works 'cause it works. I can see with majors and minors but man this guy gave me a headache. LOL

Borrowed chords are chords from a different key/mode that sound "good" because they hold common tones with the key/mode being used but introduce new tones as well. Recently a lot of instructors have tried to argue that memorizing all of these substitutions is the best way to use them but that's just a little ridiculous. Be familiar with the alterations of the chords and tones if you were to change a vi chord to a bVI or something else of that nature. Really you should follow your ear and introduce what you think will sound good and follow ot with something that makes this new chord/mode sound like it was supposed to be there. You'll end up with much better results than you would if you memorized every possible substitution.

Be able to play it to be qualified to criticise it? What? That just about epitomises everything that’s so hatefully snobbish about jazz. That’s like saying you have to be able to paint like Leonardo da Vinci before you can be an art critic. You were very quick to dismiss George Clooney as having “no talent”. Can you act? No. So what qualifies you to criticise him? All of you - try to acknowledge and respect music and guitar art forms other than jazz and just maybe more people than your closed, elite community will start to listen to and appreciate jazz.

Nah, man. I disagree. I think you need to take a hard look at the context. He's talking to musicians. I get what he is saying, because there are too many musicians who are dismissive of anything that is not in their own "wheelhouse". He is not saying you have to be the world's greatest master of a genre before you can criticize it. But, if you are a *musician*, you shouldn't really rag on a particular kind of music until you at least have explored it. Also, in all my years as a musician I honestly have never once gotten the idea that the jazz community was "hatefully snobbish". Just the opposite. Come sit in with us. Trade some fours... You'll dig it. man.

I think there has to be some understanding of the form before one can criticize it. You don't have to be Leonardo da Vinici, but you must have a basic foundation of knowledge before you can tell him his painting sucks. Otherwise, he can dismiss you just as easily.
