My guitar teacher when I was a kid (HS) taught me this chord melody style of guitar. Still occasionally play this way (usually bossa nova style). Leo Amitrano - taught more kids in Rhode Island how to play guitar than probably anyone else. His methods and the tunes he played were kind of passe by the late '70s, but I did get a lot out of it. RIP Leo.

Forgot who it was but I heard a jazz guitarist tell the story that he went to music school and learned all these chords for jazz guitar and then he got his first job as a guitarist with a jazz band and after the gig was told he was fired. And he couldn't figure out why. But, he got hired again and while playing with that band the leader stopped him and told him what he was doing WRONG. Said something like you're playing all these full chords. And guitar is generally a rhythm instrument. You're playing the bass notes and stepping on the bass player's toes. You're playing the high notes and stepping on the sax player's toes. You need to stay in the middle and just play those few strings and just comp. So he found out WHY the first band had fired him. Thought that was a funny story. My best friend, guitar instructor John Shade taught me about comping and in general learning to "shut up" or "be quiet". In other words play softer or lower in volume when other musicians have the floor. Either don't hit the strings as hard or even give the volume control a little nudge down in volume and then turn it back up when it's your turn again. He also said that if there is a vocalist EVERYONE follows the singer not the other way around. Didn't know you did these jazz videos. Great to find them as well. I like rock but I also love the standards. Something nostalgic about singing standards with those beautiful chords on the guitar.

One of my favorite things about jazz is how most of the chords when called out sound like sentences in and of themselves. LOL! There should be a Spinal Tap type skit for jazz players where the names of the chords just go on and on and on.
@Simon.the.Likeable
@Simon.the.Likeable 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm in here late. The chord names sound may like sentences but, if you've listened to a variety of the music of the last hundred or so years, none of the chord sounds or how they harmonise should be unfamiliar or too "outside." Your ear probably knows most of this stuff so it's just a case of letting your brain catch up.

Can someone explain why he went from Dm9 to G7(13) as an intro to the key of D Major when discussing ii-V intros? He didn't explain the substitution like he did with the FMaj7 to Gb13.
@soroisking

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that..it's a bit of a misnomer, he's actually playing a Imin7, bVII7 vamp (which is like playing a Imin7, Imin6 vamp) (which is like playing a CESH over a Imin) before simply changing the tonality to major. Looks like a ii-V but doesn't really function as one...

HE had a Hit with BTO..entitled Lookin Out for Number 1...the Song Starts with an Outro!...lol Anyway, Thank You for Posting!!!
