Can't thank you all at the Lincoln Center enough for posting these wonderful videos. Barry Harris' teaching style forces us to think. When Rich lowered two consecutive notes I was hearing a Minor 7th, but BH was saying Major 6th. Took a moment for the penny to drop: they are of course the same thing! I must dig deaper, when two consecutive notes raised i heard Major 6th, when two consecutive notes lowered i hear Minor 7th. They are of course inversions one of another: sort of the same thing? And it is BH's powerful teaching that has got my thinking.

Man, I'm glad I read your comment. I got to that part and thought the same thing. I was wondering why he said 6th instead of a Dm7. After reading your comment, I went back and played it, and realized what you had realized. Dm7 is harmonious with a F6. The same way a C6 is harmonious with an Am7. That's so interesting, and I never realized that before. Now, it makes me think of what you can influence with the resolution depending on what you put in the bass with your left hand. But even then, it's still up for interpretation. If you do a Cdim7 chord and resolve the two middle notes down and play a D in the bass, you could say that's a Dm7, but you could also say it's a F6/D. Like how in an old Barry Harris video when he said Monk would call a B half diminished (Bm7b5) chord a Dm/B chord. I love all these different perceptions and interpretations. Thanks, again.
@nilskavanagh
@nilskavanagh 5 жыл бұрын
Another simple trick is if you are playing let's say a Dm7 chord just play the F as the lowest note and suddenly everyone perceives it as a F6 chord. Simple but interesting

Hi Chris; from about 05:58 ... Barry says play the B7 B D# F# A = B7 at about 06:05 ... Barry says play the C#dim7 C# E G A# at about 06:10 ... Barry says next inversion of the B6???? Why did we go from B7 to B6? I get the B6 = B D# F# G# and C# E G A# = C#dim7 form this scale B C# D# E F# G G# A# Maj 6th dim in B

Mind blown! I just now for the umpteenth time, after watching a Barry Harris video, looked at my piano and saw all the new glorious inner logic. I'm so thankful to this video! Each chord change in the 12 bar blues is actually flipping polarity on the whole tone scale it uses, at each change, thereby maximizing tension by adhering to the subtle wavelike motion of travelling forward to each polarity's extreme end before passing back through release/balance again. Also, each degree of a diatonic scale partners with 2 notes from the whole tone scale, until all the notes are used up, assuming the degree corresponds to a minor, major, or dominant chord. There aren't any doubles! I realize, this is hard to explain. For example, the A and Eb pairing would lead you back to the I in C Major, the C# and G lead to the ii and so on, until each note pairing is used up, by the time you get to the vi. It even works for diatonic minor scales! I have no idea how much more I'm going to learn or how useful it's going to become but wow, now I understand how some could play and compose beautifully without even hearing the piece. Thank you once again Mr. Harris. I'm forever in awe and gratitude for your gifts. Now I will compose to generate maximum tension and release by flipping whole tone polarities!

at 04:50 which are the 4 chords he's referring to? i mean the ones that came from two two diminishes
@Pootzification
@Pootzification 6 ай бұрын
The 4 chords are B7, D7,F7 and Ab7. They are derived from Cdim7 by moving each chord tone down a halfstep. The roots of those chords (BDFAb) also spell out a Bdim7 chord. So those 4 dominat 7 chords come from Bdim 7 and Cdim7

couldnt you say that with any note as the circle itself is symmetrical
@hanktheblesseddeejay
@hanktheblesseddeejay 6 жыл бұрын
Joel Steinke Not really, lots of scales dont have a line of symmetry, draw a circle with 12 points, draw a major scale, youll notice there is a line of symmetry that cuts across from the 2nd degree of the major over to the flattend 6th.
@sense8371
@sense8371 6 жыл бұрын
I totally understand what you are saying. The best way to see this symmetry, for those that are wondering, is to take the C diminished 6 scale and the second inversion of the c major sixth chord. With the notes down with E, G,A, C, in that order notice how the Flat 6, Ab, lies in the middle of this symmetrical chord. In this sense, you can start to see that the Ab note is almost like the pivot, or middle point, which acts as the mirror on the left and right the C major scale.

Michael Siaotong play diminished chords going up chromatically, when you get to the fourth you will realise it has the same notes as the first, it is an inversion. So there are only three diminished chords.

How could a scale be not rhythmic? Jazz is tonal music
@calebwilliams6984
@calebwilliams6984 3 жыл бұрын
The added note means that if you play starting the “rhythmic” scale at the downbeat on a chord tone with an even rhythm (straight eighth or sixteenth notes, etc.) that you’ll always land on a chord tone For example, the C major sixth chord is C, E, G, A C(d)E(f)G(g#)A(b)C If the C is the down beat and the (d) is the upbeat, you’re you can play straight up or down and always play a chord tone on the down beat. Or you can syncopate and do the opposite... like every minor detail in these videos, this idea will come in very handy if you keep studying. Especially when you learn all his half step rules for the Bebop scales.... The sixth degree ( the A in the key of C) is very important in his system of harmony and simply put is considered the true of the C major chord (C, E, G, A not C, E, G ,B). Keep watching these over and over and you’ll pick up different things. Now, you learn the other 11 keys 😉
