I love this lesson . All the harmony is clear and bright and it really makes the aim of becoming a competent improviser seem achievable . Good to hear it all via piano , vibes and voice . It all seems to help . Thankyou Tim .

Simply perfect! And the reason is that you suggest a program for study a standard. For me it’s always a problem that makes me give up to not know how to approach a standard

One of my favourite versions is the one of dexter gordon on the album tangerine. Kinda really like his playing, his phrasing and his approach. And I should really practice the chords of a tune by numbers, weak point you've discoverd. ;)

Hello. I'm really enjoying this video and the way you explain things. I'm learning 'The Days of Wine and Roses' on the guitar and it's good to get different perspectives. Thank you. I was wondering if you would consider doing 'The Windmills of Your Mind'?

Don't even play vibes and I love these videos? Wondering what you work on with your private students? Same arproach do they write out solos, do analysis, transpose-Thanks for another great video

You're welcome - and yeah, basically this is what I practiced when I started so it's what I do with my advanced students as well. The most important thing for me was finding an entry point into a song, so I try to find ways for my students to experience that as well.. then hopefully the imagination takes over.

Awesome video - really helpful - so straightforward. I am guessing the next step is to try mixing up those different elements, no?

Hi Tim. I don't suppose you have a PDF of the notes you wrote for the improvisation. I was trying to take screen shots but it's hard to see everything because it was tucked away in the top corner. Cheers.

noob here, why does it use B flat melodic minor? Isn't the key F? Wouldn't B flat be lydian?

Thanks for the lesson. Usually I think of using the number system to outline a tune so that I have and idea of what key I can play in over that section. Here you frame the tune as being in one key, (all the chords are based off numbers in the key of concert F) But I don't think I can play F over the whole thing. So I was a little confused by that. Does that make sense? Also you mention the seven scales you need to know to improvise over the tune but I don't understand how and where you use the scales over the tune. Like I thought you would say over the 5th and 6th bars you can play x scale.

after reading your comment I went and watched the video again (it's been awhile ;) and I see some places where I could have explained more clearly. The majority of the tune you can use the F major scale, although from different starting points (modes). Basically like this: Bar 1: F major Bar 2: Eb Lydian dominant Bar 3-4: D mixolydian b9b13 Bar 5-6: F major (but starting on G, so G dorian) Bar 7-8: Bb melodic minor (same as Eb Lyd/Dom) Bar 9-12: F major (3-6-2-5 modes) Bar 13-14: D harmonic minor Bar 15-16: F major (2-5) Bar 17-26: same as bars 1-12 Bar 27: B locrian Bar 28: Bb lydian dominant Bar 29-32: F major (3-6-2-5-1)
