I think what Ari means is that there are musicians who will play the dorian scale on top of every m7 chord since they are thaught that dorian scale = m7 chord. But that is not the case in tonal music.

Just say Modes... 2d is dorian, 3rd is frigian 6th is aeolian .... is more confuse think like that... hugs

depends on how you define a scale ....if you say a major scale is Ionian and a dominant scale is Mixolydian then a G minor scale in the key of F is a Dorian

Agreed, these lessons are cool and I appreciate the Barry Harris style of pedagogy. However, I do believe that knowing your modes in a diatonic scale is a less complicated way of looking at all of this stuff.

Hi Ari, I'm just beginning to learn jazz and I just checked out your dominant 7 video and it's so clear and helpful! In this video however, I am confused by your first idea -- how and why the ii minor 7 should be treated as "part of" the V7. Doing so seems like it would erase the concept of a progression from ii7 to V7, which as I understand it is a foundational jazz concept... hope you (or others) can clarify!

So, can't you just say that for any non-chord tone you draw from notes that are diatonic to the key that the tune is in? The V chord uses mixolydian?
