Im an electric bass player and I got a basic chord chart from a friend years ago and taught myself basic piano chords. It did a world of wonder learning to understand basic harmony. Unlike the guitar, everything is laid out logically on a piano keyboard. Right now Im experimenting with chords and voicings on the 4 string electric bass.

I would say any one who wants to progress from a player to a musician needs to learn piano. Piano makes music theory visual and for improv musician (including guitarists) can play chords with one hand and try scales and other sounds with the other. Learn at least basic piano teaches so much about music and hearing sounds.
