Back in 2013, we had the opportunity to sit with the great Joe Temperley and learn about his warm up routine.
That morning, the late great master of the baritone saxophone showed us how he warmed up on his instrument, and demonstrated how he developed such a round, rich, and beautifully warm tone on the bari.
The world said goodbye to Joe on May 11, 2016. Learn more about the life and music of this Jazz Legend here: • The Music of Joe Tempe...

Beautiful!!! Seemingly so simple but profound. Long notes are what musicians talk about, but how many do them? I was reminded of the old Klose Method where he recommended one hour of long notes in your four hour practice! It doesn't have to be literally that amount of practice but should we warm up with them or have separate short concentrated sessions ? Remember less is more. Don't start a regime unless you mean to carry it out. ! If we all carried out Joe's wise advise we'd probably be all better musicians and players. Thank you Joe, for leaving us this. Bill. UK

Now that he's warmed up in part 2, he gets a sweet tone out of that thing.
