Today I would like to show you 2 examples of John Coltrane superimposing triad pairs on top of minor chords.
Example 1 is heard on Miles Davis’s So what from Kind of Blues
Example 2 is heard on Coltrane´s minor Blues Mr Pc from the Giant Steps album
The melodic shapes in the video come from the Jazzduets Thesaurus of Minor triad pairs:

i love how this approach constantly brings you back to the beauty of the sound of the intervals, like a steady reminder to listen.

Ah ha. So this is one of the ways the great Jon Coltrane created interesting melodic lines when playing in the modal style of that time. It’s not hard to understand and it’s a great way to create forward motion right out of the gate. Wonderful!

Your triad pair videos inspired me to actually build an instrument. The idea is to explore improvisation in a "safe" way with maps, as scales and triad pairs are given to you in two separate touch pad sections. I sampled my guitar and now it sounds kinda like it. I did it so I can play new ideas without memorizing "shapes", cause the instrument I made abstracts that "mechanic/muscle memory" layer and also takes care of some of the theory too. I select a new map and I´m instantly blessed with a new sound pallete to paint. Thank you so much for your inspiring content.

Bro who could possibly say you sound bad?? I been at this a long time and you sound great! Appreciate the vid. Even though I know this I never just focused on those 2 triad pairs. Brecker did this same thing often too

Excellent stuff! I've been looking for other ways to incorporate non chord tones, but this opened my eyes to so much more. Great examples! I knew all the music, so it was very enlightening. :)

Actually, I've been warming up with those Trane runs for the past year......without knowing it really..., I actually got the idea from part of a Joe Zawinul synth solo, learned that more or less, then realized that some what he was playing were similar to those minor triad pairs Trane was playing in that Miles video. But the those Trane surprisingly easy to play.

Hi Nick, thanx for that precious content again....I'm not a horn player....so to me it is easier to think of the two triads (F and G major triads) as a scale....to me it's a F Major Pentatonic complemented with the #4 (#11)...maybe this helpful/interesting for others too...kind regards

Q: Did Coltrane plan those "tricks", or it was just instinct?
@jackwilloughby239

I honestly think he got it from the "Hans Christian Anderson" movie starring Danny Kay which came out in 1952. The song "the Inch Worm." He recorded it in1962, but I think he was aware of it and playing it long before then. Just a guess, but with that song in mind listen again to "So What' and "Mr. P.C."

Two reasons: 1) I like the half speed down an octave as it reminds me of my old tape player 2) the solos are quite fiddly!
