I saw this video 2 months ago and didn't understand anything what was happening. After 2 months of more practice with my teacher on this tune I know and understand exactly what you're saying and trying to learn. Cheers this is a great video. My first jazz piano song I learned is Out of Nowhere and am struggling with improvisation as I have been improvising over almost the whole tune with only the gmaj scale.

It’s fantastic to see your own enthusiasm and joy when an interesting line comes out. Very motivating to see how great lines can come out of seemingly simple and practical concepts. My favourite Jazz teaching on KZbin. 👍👓

Is there a video that explains why Barry had his students play scales up to the 7th rather than the octave or the ninth?
@giorgiooliviero85542 жыл бұрын
pretty sure it's because the scale up to the seventh ends on the beat and is within a bar. Also it expresses the sound of the seventh chord very well. Barry's teachings are often much more about rhythm than about scales

Check out the original Barry Harris acrhive tapes from Germany on youtube as well as the FANTASTIC TILF - Barry Harris Channel (Things I learned from barry harris) Guy plays guitar but really breaks down the barry method to a tee

There was never a discussion about that (not with me anyway). However, Running root to root doesn't seem to create great phrases.
@larrylewicki4053 Жыл бұрын
@@giorgiooliviero8554 starting on the root in 8th notes - chord tones are on downbeats. In G: G-a-B-c-D-e-F# (capital letters are downbeats - lowercase upbeats). So the same logic applies coming down F#-e-D-c-B-a-G If you wanted to go up to the root G’ would be on an upbeat… coming down the chord notes would all be on upbeats… not a strong outline.
