I approached Roy at a gig he had at the Blue Note and asked him when he was going to play with Chick Corea next. It was a small talk stupid question on my part and basically made him secondary to Chick in his mind. His answer was a gruff, I don't know, you'd have to ask Chick. In my feeble defense, I was there to see Roy play.

I saw them during their '83 tour in Troy, NY. I actually got to meet Chick and Roy when someone pulled the fire alarm and I went out the same side exit as them. 🤣 Ultra-cool dudes, both of them, and so great together. RIP

R.I.P. Roy Haynes, one of the OG Bop to Post Bop Giants, his playing on Chick Corea's 'Now He Sings, Now He Sobs' and Pat Metheny's 'Question And Answer' are some real fantastic examples of RH's playing. His music and legacy and influence live on. What an incredible, stellar example of Roy's musicality, on the tune w/ Stan Getz, Steve Swallow and Gary Burton. I had never seen that historic footage, thanks for sharing.

I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Roy Hayes for a college project. I was going to school in Philadelphia and his group was playing at the Village Vanguard in NYC. I drove up to New York, watched an incredible set played with finesse and style. At the end of the gig his piano and bass player were sitting at the bar and I walked up to them and asked "is Roy still here, I'd like to ask him a couple of questions" the piano player shrug the shoulders and pointed towards the dressing room area and said "he's probably over there, why don't you go take a look." I walked over to the dressing room and Roy is sitting at a small table, bottle of water in his hand, wiping the sweat from his head with a small towel. He was incredibly gracious and answered every question that I had. This was when he was 80 years old. I remember walking away from that moment thinking I hope I look that good when I am 80, much less sound that good. Fountain Of Youth Indeed!

One of the last my drummer-musicians heroes!! I met him once off stage in a concert in Portugal and, knowing my love for jazz drumming, said to me: If you come to New York send me a post card before. Mr. Haynes what is your address. Just write Roy Haynes, New York city. Everybody knows Roy Haynes. Even if this is not totally true, everybody should listen to his art and craft. Still is my favourite drummer in a guitar trio. That record trio of Pat Metheney, Dave Holland and the master Haynes recorded in one day. Holland had never played with Mr. Haynes before. Always on my mind and heart Mr. Haynes wherever you are.

I watched your video tribute to mr Haynes a few hrs After you posted it. A beautiful tribute, the footage from the 60s I’ve seen, but what an amazing solo! Chicks trio in Japan Is also amazing(I saw that trio at the Vanguard in 1982). I was fortunate enough to have seen Roy many times since the early 1970s, some of those gigs were unusual and unique. I talked to him and had a few conversations over the years, when he was on a break, always friendly and so informative. Of course, he is one of the greatest innovators in modern jazz,Having influenced basically every drummer who came after him.ty Brett & god bless Roy Haynes🙏

My sincere condolences to CRAIG, GRAHAM and the family and friends of the great ROY HAYNES! I am extremely grateful 🙏 for having been an exponent of the ROY HAYNES HIP ENSEMBLE back in the 70's. He taught me so much about playing jazz and performing live on various stages in many venues! I will never forget when I was a guest at his house in LONG ISLAND, he exclaimed that he played with the great CHARLIE PARKER! What a revelation! His sense of time as well as his sensitivity to music was outstanding and phenomenal! Thank you ROY HAYNES for your contribution to AMERICA'S CLASSICAL 🎶 MUSIC known as jazz. I will never forget your influence and inspiration! May you rest in power and peace! Your former piano player, DENZIL A. MILLER, JUNIOR!!!

I literally was just wondering yesterday whether the great Roy Haynes was still with us. He was indeed still with us yesterday but now I find out that today he's gone. Ninety nine years! What a career he had, what an imaginative drummer, and apparently what a great person he was. Think about all the musical associations he had over the years with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Roland Kirk, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Oliver Nelson, Eric Dolphy, Chick Corea, Gary Burton and so many more. RIP Mr. Snap Crackle! I'll come back later to watch the rest of this tribute...thank you for doing this.

No comments yet . God bless this man and his family. Such a great drummer and I remember the live at St Nicks Charlie Parker LP which I think had Roy Haynes on the cover . The Pat Metheny LP Question and Answer was out of this orbit . Great great drumming. The bit of film Jazz on a Summer's Day with Thelonius Monk and Henry Grimes and Roy is outstanding of course . The live at Newport with John Coltrane with Roy subbing for Elvin Jones another legendary recording. The LP Times Square with Gary Burton and Steve Swallow with Roy and Tiger on trumpet. The Bud Powell LP on Blue Night with Sonny Rollins and Fats Navarro. What another great record with Tommy Potter on Bass . Saw Roy live in 1999 at the Pizza Express in London with his trio and yeah of course it was off the chart , great trio . Another time he was in Ronnie Scott's watching Elvin Jones but yeah we were watching him watching Elvin ! Loved that film with him and Chick and Mirislav in Japan that was class stuff. The man has been a jazz super hero

WOW...just short of 100! I hope/think he deserved a long life. Superbly incredible drummer! I saw him with Chick Corea and Miroslav Vitous once...they killed it! Afterword, the three came out for a bow, and it was the extreme of Large, Medium, and Small, with Miroslav quite tall, Chick in the middle, and Roy was the shorty! Hillarious... more importantly, the music utterly COOKED. They complimented each other really well. A magical trio(!)

That ROY-ALTY album with Roy Hargrove & Chick was my first introduction to this gentleman . I loved his drumming on Equipoise by Stanley Cowell , it’s s pure Fire 🔥. In his interview about the song Equipoise he said “ I played that song like it was mine man “ . Until he found out that Stanley Cowell wrote the song for his daughter . 😅 That generation of Jazz players through there music , helped through some dark times in life , that lasted for 11yrs . Their music has a different meaning to me . Thanks Brother .
