I absolutely love this piece! Allen does a wonderful job arranging this for Big Band and I love how he has some of Clifford's original solo in there. Here is one of the best! Gotta love it!!!

If Chris Botti took a solo over Joy Spring, it would sound something like this. Not a bad thing. Plus, that's no Wilton Felder on sax, but we already have a Wilton Felder, so give the guy some credit for sounding original. There's nothing wrong with experimenting with different individual styles within the jazz idiom.

yea, true. but i also love they way he'll shoot for notes he actually can't hit in front of an audience. wynton and some others great virtuosos won't. i really enjoy seeing that a lot.

i think it's a matter of taste. He didn't really go outside of the harmonic structure to make it interesting but some people may like the arrangements over solo work.

@JazzTrumpetBlues Iranian isnt a race, U mean Persian, which encompasses Iran to afghanistan. Hindu is a religion, there are multiple super-tribes in Indian. And Italian is not a race, it is just mediterraenean white as opposed to albino white irish can be at times.

Yeah, that kind of comment bugs me. By that yardstick, how do we account for all the Korean and Chinese musicians who play Mozart and Chopin so brilliantly? Maybe I'm getting off track a little, but the notion that you have to be born into a tradition to play it convincingly is nothing but romance. Another example is Rory Block, a white female guitarist and singer who plays the SHIT out of those old Robert Johnson songs.

Swinin hard. Allen killed those changes.. He just.. sounds too classical I guess. No doubt a great player though. Great arrangement. But no one can swing this like Brownie.

Allan Vizzutti is an amazing trumpet player but not a jazz trumpet player, he plays his solo like a "Arban Etude"...

However, I understand the controversy about someone referring to him sounding "too white" I do not directly agree with this statement nor do I have ill feelings towards the individual who said this, as people of different ethnic backgrounds do in fact sound actively different in their improvisation, as well as the way they accent certain notes. And yes black people do have a very desired way about their improvisation that cannot be even closely imitated by any one of a different race. Look at the race of all of the famous and most influential Jazz musicians.

Richard Salvucci I played with some alumniof this band. All good, versatile, swingi ng players. 2 others before my time you may have heard of. Steve Gadd, Ray Gomez. So, yeah dawg, you gots to be somewhat qualified to play in this band, or at least you did in 1968.....on the other hand i have a cd of theirs, and i skimmed thru it once.. just the thought of it yawn .zzzzzzzz...it's at Oxfam in Frankfurt, Germany if you want to pick it up for 2 Euro. hee hee but, drummer did NOT turn the time around. what brand of caffeine are you on? cuz i want some and, shit , it's a TRUMPET, and you want it to swing? dreamers.... hee hee hee
