I wouldn't say they're nerdy per se. They go through a couple of phases. First, they're comforting ( _if I need to stop I can use these_ ). Then they're unnecessary ( _because you never find yourself using them to stop_ ). Finally, they get in the way ( _because they limit your foot's range of motion_ ).
