JB Weld Can't Fix Plastic Gas Tanks September 3 2023

JB Weld will not fix plastic gas tanks. I received a email from the JB Weld cpompany stating: "We do not have an item for plastic gas tanks. Others have repaired these by using an electric plastic welding kit." I have a 2007 Chevy Express Van. Someone drilled a hole in my gas tank and stole my gas. I tried fixing the hole with QuikSteel. The QuikSteel started to leak once it got wet. I tried fixing the hole using JB Weld regular because it resists gasoline. I covered the outer JB Weld regular with JB Weld for water.

Thank you for this video, finally an answer that’s relevant to my question!! I can also confirm, the company told me the same thing. That although they do have two or possibly more now, products for bonding plastics that can be used for automotive applications as well… they “do not currently have a product to adhere/seal plastic gas tanks”. So I can confirm, I was told the same thing. But personally I think you have the right idea. If the steel Stick was working fine until it was submerged… then makes sense to me to use something more for water proofing on the outside of the fully cured steel stick putty formula. There are better products for water proofing then water weld in my opinion. If it doesn’t totally work I would try (unless some of these will fail at a high enough temperature, not sure how hot a gas tank gets honestly… my guess is not that hot but I’m not a mechanic by any means just a carpenter) but forti flash rolls which is basically just butylthene in a tape-like roll, works great. Works even better when it gets hot enough to melt, when that happens it will simply never come off. Also, they make a caulk that Home Depot sells that’s for water proofing hardware on boats that puncture/go through the hull. It is the best water proofing anything I have ever tried. Honestly can not remember the name. But it is the only thing with the word “marine” or “marine grade” on the bottle in the title of the tube of caulk. That stuff will never fail. Salt water, fresh water, both extremely hot and extremely cold temperatures, will even fully cure if applied under water. It has NEVER failed me. Give it a shot over the JB weld if the water weld fails. Thanks again!

I still tried the method I mentioned in the video and it is still holding strong. The key is you must plug the hole with a screw this way the gasoline isn't just sitting on the material. The gas tank is under a lot of internal pressure.

You have to use steel stick the regular JB weld and quick steel I don't think is fuel resistant only certain JB wild products are fuel resistant. I'm using it right now for my 2010 Prius I drive for Uber I've put about 500 miles on it it's holding up

It is still holding. I finally filled the tank up with a full tank of gas and everything is holding.

I tried the technique and it is still working. I think using a screw to take up hole space.

Well, the JB Weld comment is funny because I just bought water weld and it says it’s for fuel tanks?!?!

JB weld does not want to take responsibility, Even if its a 100% fix, If they marketed anything gas tank related that becomes a liability, So they will never say we have a fix,, Sorry to hear about some fool putting a hole in your gas tank, I once had a stick pop through a metal tank, I had to replace the tank,

I think one concern is that there are so many different types of plastic gas tanks. Also if you don't plug the hole with a screw there is always the chance of having a blow out from too much pressure build up inside the gas tank.

@@anthonysholars7701exactly, and certain plastics are insanely hard to bond to Personally, I'd try to figure out what plastic the tank is made of and plastic welding it shut. It's pretty cheap and a lot more permanent. The easiest way would be to get some scrap gas tank plastic off of the same model car. Most junk yards drill a hole in the gas tank to drain out the gas so no harm no foul.

If you still have this issue, please check out the company Tech-Bond Solutions. They have a few videos here on KZbin that go over their HDPE (plastic) gas tank patches. They aren't the cheapest thing, but supposedly they hold up. Otherwise for a permanent fix, you're likely looking at removing the tank and performing a plastic patch weld specific for HDPE plastics. Hopefully you can get a solution that lasts, sucks that someone dropped this issue in your lap for a few lousy gallons of gas..

Did you use a screw inside the hole. I think the screw will take away alot of space. The technique is still working.

You got to use the steelstik putty. The liquid type wont stick properly.

Hello sir, I just wanted to ask if the fuel tank was still holding up today?

Yes it is I looked at the date I did the repairs a few days ago and realized its been close to one year. I think sanding very well and cleaning the air with alcohol before applying glue.

Hope you’re wrong… I just did this today, too. 10/20/23. If it doesn’t work, I’ll try something else. But I’ll be go to hell if I’ll pay $214.00 for another plastic DeVillbis fuel tank. There’s no reason for that price gouging. I’ll come up w/ another alternative….
