We have the Ram 3500 Mega cab Limited addition, with all the bells and whistles. We use it mostly for towing our Bighorn, which usually weighs in at 16,000 pounds. It’s a great truck! We can park it in normal size parking spaces if need be. The 8 foot bed you would stick out way to much. We use the rear seat area for our two German Shepard’s who love that big area. If you measure that area out, it about the same size as a queen size bed. We use an Anderson Ultimate hitch and we can turn to 85 degrees, but rarely have had to do that. We have towed all over the country in the last two years and have had zero problems with the truck. The only thing that I would like to have Ram change is the 31 gallon diesel tank. When you get 9 to 11 mpg towing : that does not go to long. We had a 2500 Laramie SRW Diesel, but when we got our new Bighorn it turned out to be heavy for it. Printed numbers lie on both the truck and trailer weights. The 3500 pulls it like it’s not even there, so a way more comfortable tow.

Wow thanks for sharing! For 2020 you can get a 50 gallon tank option on longbed trucks but wish it was available for all. I too had the issue of only being able to go barely 250 miles before looking for the next station and that stinks when getting diesel takes about 30 minutes every time you stop 👍🏾

Yup, but if you need a truck that's family and parking lot friendly, but still has the towing capacity, well then you definitely want the mega-cab, short bed combo. Everyone's needs are unique to them. Austin is notorious for having undersized parking spaces and tight quarters in parking lots. There's no way I would want a long wheelbase truck. If you need extra capacity for a job, get a bed extender and/or a trailer.

@@PaulSter I don’t think a crew cab Would be not be family friendly. Loaded the wife, kid and 2 dogs into it comfortably. As for parking lot friendly. I have legs and am Not afraid of parking in the back of a lot. I live in Denver and the surrounding areas have tight spots, parking garages and tight corners. I just get creative. Might have also gotten “stuck” in a parking garage and hand to back all the way out.

Fred, I wish they would. I have the mega in a dually and the ONLY reason I'd want the 8' bed is to fit a normal-sized camper on it and still be able to tow my boats. Otherwise, the 6.5' bed is perfection. for towing my 41' 5th wheel and all the daily stuff I use it for.

I have a 2019 Laramie Mega dually with every option (minus the 4:10 gears) & love it. We full-time RV with our 41-foot Solitude & pulls like a dream. Demco slider hitch has no clearance problems up to 90 degree turns. Wanted a Mega & glad we did - reclining seats, room behind the seats, flat floor for hauling stuff, & a lot more room for our 2 teenagers, golden retriever, & 2 cats. Plus, I may be in the minority here, but I think it looks a LOT better than a long bed - much more balanced.

I like that mega cab dually. That setup always looks good to me! Thanks for sharing about the 5th wheel/gooseneck prep. That’s the only draw back to the mega cab is the 5th wheel towing. I’m sure that the price would be about the same going with the aftermarket B&W as if you added the option of the prep package, if not maybe a little less. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Bro, you found my truck! Yes the long bed hands down. You sacrifice room in the cab, but gain it in the bed. It is so nice towing and not being worried when backing up that the bulk head is going to hit the cab. I opted not to get HO and Aisian, so my payload is 5,760 lbs but I do have the 4:10. When I purchased my truck, the sales man told me he had never seen someone so anal about numbers in his life, and yes, I am anal as hell when it comes to those numbers. I looked at so many trucks, I thought I would never find it. One then that day came, I found Rambo, and I have never looked back or regretted it. Rambo is a frigging beast man, a beast I tell ya. I cannot get it in the garage, or most drive through fast food joints, and no car washes. It's just too damn big.

I’m waiting till the 2023 models come out as I’ve read that the interior of the cab is being redesigned to give a more clear viewing area out the front windshield plus other minor changes. To the critics of how the Mega Cab looks, to each their own. I think they look freaking awesome! You need more room in the bed...get a tailgate extender. You carry more passengers and cargo inside your truck most of the time than outside. Plus, I’ve read the Mega Cab retains more value over the Crew Cab models. Crew Cabs make perfect sense for companies, contractors, etc., but for the daily driver or weekend warrior, the Mega Cab is perfect. There are also quite a few owners of Mega Cabs that use them for cross-country travel where they sleep in them. Try doing that night after night in a Crew Cab. And as JB points out, get the sliding hitch and you’re good to go if you need to pull a trailer. How many times do you make 90-degree turns anyway? Go with the Mega Cab, Longhorn, upgrades, and the Aisin tranny and you’re golden for the next 10-20 years.

Appreciate the insights you share. You helped me decide on my 2500 Hemi I ordered for better payload capacity rating. I see a lot of people in the comments choosing to go 3500 so they can carry more to be "street legal". It may be worth reminding them that if their combined vehicle and trailer weight exceeds 26k lbs then most states require a class A and/or CDL to actually be legally driven. Most rv dealerships won't say that or people make blanket statements about rv exemptions which often aren't true. In my experience as a prior law enforcement officer, most officers cared more about proper registration and licensing than manufacturer payload rating numbers which are harder to enforce since people make modifications from the factory packages. Some people could get into more trouble getting a higher weight rated truck without the right license vs putting airbags on a 2500 when the numbers are a little tight with payload. No one likes recommending anyone challenge the gvwr nor am I right now trying to do so but gvwr often speaks to the classification of commercial vs no-commercial more than the capability of the vehicle. But back to my point, people may actually need to choose less trailer like I did unless they are willing to step up to the requirements of a class A or CDL which I'm not interested in these days lol.

Just wanted to add that people may literally be towing illegally if for example they have a truck with a registered gvwr of 11400 and a trailer registered gvwr anything over 14600 without a class A since the gcwr would be over 26k lbs. I agree exceeding any manufacturer rating is not only a bad idea but also illegal lol. Thanks for bringing awareness to this!

Great job showing the differences! I think it’s great that Ram has kept the Mega cab. That gives more options of what fits the buyer. We like the Mega cab over the crew for now because of the storage behind the seats. The kids throw pillows and blankets back there along with the dog bowls leash and toys. When we go to a fifth wheel and the kids are grown we will most likely go to a long bed crew though.

Even if you have the 5th wheel prep package from the dealer you can actually unbolt the factory gooseneck box and bolt in a B&W one so you can have the square shank

I would have to get the long bed. The Mega Can short bed just looks stubby to me. You can just haul more and I like having lots of payload. I would however get the air bags on the truck no matter what. Thanks reviewing these 2 trucks JB.

I have a 8 foot bed anything shorter is completely useless to me because I tow a 40 footer and I have a large tool box for tools. Plus I don't carry any passengers so the megacab is a waste for me. They look nice but I still prefer the long bed. Great review tho
