Jeff takes this episode of History Hunters to the Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri to visit the graves of legendary CBS Evening News anchor Walter Cronkite and tell about his life, as well as visit the crypt of chocolate magnate Russell Stover and his wife Clara Stover.
This video will revisit the lives of both men and reveal some little known facts about both.

If there is anything I would like to ask Walter Cronkite if I was able to bring him back is what he NOW, in 2023, thinks of the movie "Network". I rewatched the movie a few years ago. In 1976 it was considered an outrageous black satire on the state of network television - especially the news. To watch it now is absolutely gasp-inducing in how much of that movie came to be. To get a better example, you can watch the entire 4 days of the CBS footage the weekend that JFK was assassinated on You Tube. You'll see for yourself just how far we sunk in reporting news since then. To say men like Cronkite was above the rest is an understatement. How I wish we could have men like him back in the business running it like they did 50 years ago - when the news division was designed to LOSE money because facts are what mattered, not what they thought the public wanted.

I'm of the age to remember that terrible day...And I'd get up early to watch the lunar launches while the rest of my family slept!---Fast forward many years, I was privileged to be able to tour the Soviet Union on a nursing tour. Having grown up with Walter Cronkite's reporting (and years before with Chet Huntly & David Brinkley), I learned that the world isn't always as reported by Walter. ---I would have loved to explore the mausoleum...I think I'm fearless!

Great video. Like you I grew up with Walter Cronkite reporting the day's news. He kept it straight and gave you the facts, letting you make up your own mind about the events of the day. How refreshing, compared to today, where media packages the news according to their particular political viewpoint. The stories behind Russell Stover and his involvement with the Eskimo Pie was unknown to me. Eskimo Pie was one of my favorites as a kid. Funny, I would have expected Walter Cronkite's final resting place to be more like Stover's! Thank you for all the research and hard work you put into these videos.

I was 4 when President Kennedy was assasinated...but I remember every detail of that moment in my house that continued for the next few days. I knew it was bad and very sad as my mother was crying. Seeing this man on TV take off his glasses with such emotion to share with the world what had happened. He was family to everyone. Also, remember with excitement and anticipation the landing on the moon. He just had this way about him. Never been anyone else like him ! He was something special. I grew up in Roeland Park, KS, I still to this day remember the Stover mansion in Mission Hills. While Mrs. Stover was alive and living in the mansion she had red awnings over all of the windows with her husband’s stylized initials on all of the awnings. When Mrs. Stover died they had an estate sale at the mansion, my mother and a friend of hers took me to the auction at the mansion. I’m sure my mother still has some trinkets that she bought there.

Walter Cronkite was THE voice that guided us through JFK's assination and funeral. A true professional who brought the nation through the most devastating news most of my generation had gone through at the time. We grieved and yet he was the wise grandfather who guided us with fact and not opinion. Today there are no "reporters" only opinion shows disguised as "news" 😥 Russell Stover candy is the best! Before he anchored CBS News he had a show in the 50's called "You Are There". Actors would dress up as various famous people each week and Walter would interview them. Famous naval heroes, Generals,. inventors, industrious pioneers like Andrew Carnegie, presidents, etc. It was on CBS on Sundays and always I watched it. I remember he interviewed Betsy Ross. CBS has fallen a long way down since the days of Edward R Murrow, Douglas Edwards and Walter Cronkite. Well done Jeff.😀

I was 8 years old when Kennedy was shot and sitting in my 3rd grade class in Castro Valley CA when the principal of the school came in to inform the teacher what had happened with tear's in their eye's they told us what had happened. Walter Cronkite was on every night in our household growing up! His voice and the way he spoke the news just had a soothing effect on me. He was the best in my book. I was six when JFK was assassinated. I don’t remember the day of the shooting. Do remember coming home from church the Sunday after with my mom. My dad was watching the coverage on TV. My father never missed church but he did that day. My mom always loved Russell Stover chocolates. I bought her boxes over the years for many birthdays and Christmas gifts. She could’ve had more expensive chocolates but she preferred Russell Stover. I hope you and Sarah had a wonderful trip to visit your family!

I recall every, single detail, as if it was yesterday. This is the first time I have seen the tape of an "emotional" Walter Cronkite since I saw it back then. I remember it like it just happened, including the removal of the glasses, and the hard swallowing. WOW Unfortunately, I *know the Stovers all too well.😋 They made wise business decisions, and their candy is still around. There is something about mausoleums. I know what you mean, Jeff. My Auntie Gloria (the former actress) appeared on a TV episode of "You Are There" portraying the historical figure of Lady Jane Grey, broadcast from nearly seventy yrs ago, and so she probably met up w/ Cronkite (he was the host of the series) as they were most likely ensconced there in the same CBS studio. My paternal grandfather was a KC boy (yea!). Of course, L.A. has its chocolate emporium-head equivalent in Charles See, founder of See's Candies, and he's interred @ FLG. Speaking of the latter, if you felt uneasy being in the mausoleum depicted, you should try out the GM in the virtually uninhabited (visitor-wise) sections away from the LS Window area; one area is claimed to be haunted. 😀 I've been on the grounds in the oldest section of FLG an hour before closing when it was pitch dark outside (excepting the sporadic electrical light illuminations), and I found that to be SO K-O-O-O-O-O-L!

I don't know if you realized, but the mausoleum is a Masonic lodge. A few times a year, various local lodges will do degree work there. This is usually raising someone to Master Mason. I am a Freemason and have attended lodge there several times.

I was only two years old when the JFK assassination occurred so I don’t remember it, but I choke up every time I see Cronkite delivering the horrible news to the American people. You could just feel the lump in his throat to acknowledge that such a popular president had been murdered. That’s just a horrible thing to happen to our leader no matter who he is.

Another great video. I will have to go visit Walter as I live only a few minutes away. Walter’s family was from St. Joseph, MO which is not too far from Kansas City. Walter lived in Kansas City, was married there, and I believe worked for The Kansas City Star. He came back occasionally to the area to visit. I remember him coming back to open the newly restored Folly Theater as well as helping launch the campaign to restore the once dilapidated Union Station, now a gem of Kansas City where the NFL Draft was just held. His cousin, Kay Barnes went on to become two term mayor of Kansas City, the first woman to hold the office. Once again, quite an enjoyable video. I hope you enjoyed or are enjoying your time in Kansas City. Hopefully you will get a chance to visit Union Station and the National World War Museum located up the hill from the station.

Thank you for the research and great production quality you put into this. I, like you, grew up watching Cronkite as a kid, otherwise known as "the remote control!" I've called KC home for close to 30 years and didn't realize he was buried here. Walt retired to his yacht and would sail the Intercoastal waterway along the eastern seaboard. Periodically, he would moor up at the Fairfield Harbor marina in New Bern, NC where I grew up. Thanks again Jeff for the great content!

Jeff, I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2006 at the Henry Ford Museum where I worked at the time. Small world he was a friend of an acquaintance of mine. Walter Cronkite probably would have been buried in Kansas City or Kansas even if he had not married his wife. His mother is buried in Mount Muncie cemetery in Lansing, Kansas. If you ever go to Lansing Kansas, the In Cold Blood Killers are there. Walter Cronkite's Mother had family in Leavenworth, Kansas. They owned a store there which were Walter Cronkite's Grandparents.
