JBL 123A-3 Aquaplas Application

I purchase a set of 123A-3 woofers from a seller who had them reconed in the 90’s. He said the recone kits back then didn’t have the white Aquaplas on them and they weren’t coated in the rear like in some cases. I was going to have them reconed with the white aftermarket recone kits but they already sounded really good and I’ve been curious about the Aquaplas coating available on eBay. So I took a chance to try it. If it didn’t work, then I’d move on and recone them. Well it worked out far better than I expected. I applied 2 thin coats and replaced the dust caps, installed them in my cabinets and was blown away. Not only did they look good, but they sounded a lot better too. I used stiff artist brushes I picked up at Hobby Lobby and it was super easy to apply. This is a great method if you purchase uncoated aftermarket kits or need it as a touch up. I’m not sure about applying it completely over already treated woofers, but it can be thinned with water.

How do you recone these types of woofers that have that rippled outer rim?

Would this exact container be ideal for a crack repair touchup to blend in the color of the cone or would the off white instead of graphene be ideal? Thanks.

The membrane destroyed? This was an aftermarket black cone with no Aquaplas on it that the previous owner had done in the 90's. But even the original JBL Cones start out with black (Membranes) and then Aquaplas was factory applied to them. What was the point of "My Stupidity" ? I had a choice to spend $15 and 15 minutes of my time to try and see if this would work and get the woofers to look like original L100 Woofers... Or...spend somewhere around $200 plus and a few hours of my time to recone them with another set of after market cones with the aquaplas already applied. I tried this method first and it worked. If it didnt work, then I would have went with the recone option. My speakers not only look like originals, they sound noticably way better than before the Aquaplas was applied. I hope i explained it simple enough for you.

@@johnbrender7635 No, it is NOT an explanation. Besides the fact, that you know nothing about speakers and you dont know what and why you are doing. It is simple thing. If you know what are you doing, make video with measured response, impedance, THD, IMD, CSD, burst decay, impulse response etc.. - before and after application. If the result is better and CONSISTENT, and with modified crossover applied, - I will eat my underpants. If not, you are presenting only bullsh-t with bucket and thick brush - and the result is only in style - "I like it yellow more".

@@djungariangrowler1241 That's how the woofers came from factory, instead of insulting these people you could've looked up for yourself and avoided making a fool out of yourself. From the official JBL 4311 Manual: "The surface of the cone is coated with an exclusive damping formulation that provides the precise mass and density necessary to optimize bass performance, prevent spurious resonance and provide smooth performance extending into the midrange region." It's quite ironic how you attacked these people and couldn't do 5 minutes of google searches to get the information from JBL THEMSELVES.
