JBL SDP 55 First Impressions & Basic Setup

Ugh 😑 my plan to go separates was for next year. But now I’m not sure I can wait 😢. Got my rack put together last night. It was pretty simple. Mine was very well packed and no damage on any panel. I had one small scratch and one bad M8 screw. It was one of those Philip head screws, had no star 🥴.... later this afternoon I’ll start unplugging and managing all my equipment into the new rack.....Thanks for doin this video series. I’ve been putting off the rack route for 6 months. I’m glad I finally got some motivation to get this done.

Awesome video man! I haven’t watched the youthman video that you were talking, but I have demoed that ready player one scene many times and I heard exactly what you were describing! It was like watching a whole new scene. I even got more action out of my rears on the coin part that I had never heard before

I just got mine hooked up last night and it was the same way. Big difference over my Marantz SR5010. I’m trying to find the Dirac settings. Such a pain to setup this thing lol. Oh I got mine from Zach as well lol.

I have the same Sony 85 inch 4K tv but coupled it with a Dolby Atmos Samsung soundbar and sub. The sound quality is great.

@@COGuyStuff Wonder if receiver is just as good.I would have to buy a 6 channel amp to go with the 55 since I already own a 5 channel Parasound Amp and my system is a 7.2.4 setup.

So where or which sud out of the processor did you use to connect you minidsp to. I’m using rca but can’t get the sound out of the sub1 rca out (red one), or should I be using the (black) sub2 out?

It doesn’t matter they’re both the same signal. Make sure you go in the web interface under speaker types, and select your appropriate configuration. The one just labeled subwoofer is the RCA sub/sub to output. If it’s set to none, you won’t have any sound, I have multiple so I happen to be using channels 15 and 16 for my subs

Love your clip descriptions. Great video. Considering JBL SDR-35/38 though I do have 4 QSC 900/1500 watt stereo amps. Are the processing guts the same in those and this SDP-55?

Also super curious about that "Logic-16 3D upmixer". Is that what gives the JBL that level of 3D resolution?

Oh no. All this is with NOTHING on. Zero processing. The Logic16 is Harman's own type of upmixing, competing with DTS NeuralX and the Atmos upmixer. Unfortunately it's still in development and not advised to use though. When I was talking about the 3d effect that was TWO channel only, not surround.

I'm considering the same processor. I think I heard your speaker configuration is 5.1.2. If so, are the heights in front pointed at the seating? If not, what is the setup?

It's 5.2.4 - the atmos are in ceiling.

I have gotten 3 dimensional sound objects to come into the sound bubble (rather than simply panning around the outside of it) with a simple 5.2.2 with Top Middles using a mid-ranged Denon. In my case I think its mostly good setup. The top-middles are in a good position to help bring sound objects into the space near where I am sitting is the only way I can describe it. I need to pick up Ready Player One to see if that 3 dimensional sound with the coins is present. I wouldnt expect that it is. I doubt the Denon has the resolution for it. (I have seen RPO on streaming but I wouldnt expect anything like that from streamed audio) I recommend trying out Jupiter Ascending to really test out your system. That has one of the best immersive mixes I have ever heard. Even better in some ways than Mission Impossible: Fallout (another good one if you dont have that)

Oh I had a 3d soundfield with atmos before, but not like this. It's another level. This isn't something you can get from a regular receiver, not even close.

The front stage is louder because you’re using XLR cables.

Not specifically because they are XLR. The balanced outputs are just higher, at 2v, allowing the amp to reach full power. Some RCA are also 2+. Like I said, the Yamaha was only 1v.

That's a bug with the Dirac Software, not the unit.
