Here's a cool plant. This is a wax myrtle and it can be used to make candles. Interestingly, wax myrtles are not true myrtles. True myrtles are native to southern Europe. Wax Myrtles are actually in the bayberry family. They are similar to myrtles and are found in similar environments. It's likely that early settlers familiar with the myrtles from Europe mistook the wax myrtles for true myrtles.
One more interesting fact about wax myrtles is that Myrtle Beach, SC is named for them. That's because there are lots of wax myrtles along the grand strand.
