'Just worked on one of these beasts. 'Wish I'd watched this first. Luckily, the guy had turned it off before too much damage. After replacing a cracked screen resistor and cleaning up the bias adjust board and its connectors, the amp worked but still wasn't right. Finally found that little cap on the end (C46) shorted. Now that it's working on the bench, I'm paying closer attention to the things you've highlighted. Now for Parts 2 & 3.

I feel the pain. Some years back, I went deep on a '99 (if I remember right) DSL50. The board was populated with wrong values etc. The amp worked okay but I decided to go in, rework the board rather drastically, drilled holes in the PCB and filled in around the leads with high dielectric, electronics grade silicone. Also put in a choke, and the proper value components, as well as using some higher wattage rated, tighter tolerance metal film resistors. All told, I think I replaced 33 components. Yeah, I took LOTS of notes, LOTS of pictures, and even used a very fine point sharpie to code number the wires and connectors - most tedious! Did some of what were known as "Joey" mods on the forums at the time. Well, it worked - to my huge surprise! I'm not a tech though I went to school for electronics in the 80's but never worked as an amp tech but rather used the knowledge on other tech type jobs. The DSL50 is quiet, stable, tighter, better sounding and reliable for years now although I do not use the amp for gigging. I also have an '08 DSL100 and I ordered the board for it a couple of years ago. Have not installed it yet. My board does not show most of the issues you note here. The caps are tight, the solder-side points are shiny. I see two places where it may have been reworked. Con 10 has beads that look dull, and the R60, 61 etc resistors may have been retouched but look okay and shiny. The amp works okay, and I have not had time or inclination to do another such deep dive yet, but when I do ... thanks for all the tips. Cool video. Liked and subscribed. I have one on my bench right now with an original Issue 1 board, and I have a brand new Issue 20 board still in the bubble wrap to install. It was "missing" the main fuse holder, so I have a lot of tracing to do before the swap. I've already discovered 3 non-factory components and 4 leads from the power section PCB were not connected to the power transformer correctly, so the previous owner obviously attempted a "repair" at some point. What model Pace desoldering iron do you have?

I m having problems to find with less than 800 or 1000V in Brazil kbpc1010 or kbpc810…. Is it ok to use ? Kind regards and greetings from Brazil !!

Hello mate! You can always use a diode in a position where it will be operated with less reverse voltage than the rating. Just be aware of the forward voltage drop, so if you're very close to the desired voltage, you might want to go for a Schottky diode to keep the voltage drop low.

I forgot to mention the speaker jack grounding issues - a whole other can of worms! Some forums at the time i worked on mine showed guys soldering to the thin metal "fingers" of the jack. Mmm, nope! If I remember right - it's been quite a few years now - I ran buss wire across for assured ground connections. Thing is though, never let anybody hook up speaker cabs to your DSL head, because if you do the buss method, ALL of the jack grounds are connected instead of being switched by the jacks themselves via the factory impedance switching scheme. With all jacks grounded, someone could, for example, hook up 3 cabs and drop the combined impedance too far down. Just beware of JCM2000 DSL50/100 heads. They are still available and cheap compared to ANY Brit made Marshall and they can sound good and they can be made reliable but there's a lot to know about 'em. I you HAVE EXPERIENCE modifying/building your own amps - or are on good terms with a good tech - go for it! Otherwise, I would recommend buying the latest DSL and save yourself the headaches. I personally wouldn't take on the TSL combos, but that's just my preference.

I own a dsl100hr and would love if it you could make a video detailing the alterations that need to be made to one to ensure a long life. I’m an aspiring amp tech and can definitely do the work. Just not sure what a professional experienced technicians approach would be to “bulletproof” an amp

Any neutral cure, non-acetic based RTV silicone is fine. It's not touching any metal anyway.

Ok I'll be that guy. Kvelertak 🤘🤘. What a fun band, I was lucky to catch them live a few years back. I remember hearing an interview on the SiriusXM metal station years ago, and they were asked about the pronunciation of their name. One of the guys was like, oh yeah you don't really have the K V sound in English 😂. I remember Lyle's video on this and it's disappointing that a replacement component needs so much rework to be viable and reliable in an amp. Maybe that's a good litmus test when trying out a new tech. "Hey, what do you think of the Marshall replacement boards for the DSL amps?"

Those expanding two part foam bags are perfect for things like these boards. I’m almost certain they’d only need one. That and a double boxing would almost guarantee a good board by the time it gets to the customer. It’s a shame these amps have all the troubles they do. I actually like the way sound. Yes. I’m OCD as hell with caps and resistors. Labels up and tolerance bands in the same directions.

Yes, that expanding crap would be perfect. Honestly, I think that the distributor kind of expects the tech to fix them before installation. It'd be nice if they were cheaper in light of that. I haven't charged the customer for that, so essentially I'm donating time to Marshall and CE Distribution. Coz you know, they're doing it tough.

I know this is an old question, but I ordered one literally a few hours ago…. They are available, but only by special order. I guess they’re rarely kept in stock because they don’t get as hot as the 100w model. Mine’s only done it once, but I want it reliable…

Re: 4:00, If it's a double sided board where component leads are soldered into holes that are plated straight through, I wouldn't bother, or recommend, bending the leads over on the other side of the board before soldering, certainly not by more than about 5 degrees.. It just makes it harder for repair techs to remove them at a future date without damaging the pads and plated- through rivets. I agree that the capacitors should have been pushed down more tightly against the board before soldering, and the hot glue obviously was poorly applied (probably wasn't hot enough to flow onto and bond well with the board). Silicone works better for this anyway.

Really seems like PCBs are more trouble than they're worth in amps given the heat and vibration. I've yet to see a vid where a good portion of the solder joints aren't cracked. Only party that seems to benefit from these dreadful things are the companies' wallets. Also, I'm Canadian and house and moose sound nothing alike! Ha.

There are some companies who do it much better. Vox and Orange in particular. Even their low end models are better thought out and implemented than this PCB.

@@BradsGuitarGarage i was thinking about buying a JVM410H, but since i watched a couple amp techs videos, especially psionic audio, i've become quite hesitant with my former favourite brand. 😂 i guess this is the thing where people say "a friedman is like a better marshall with higher quality components", it's probably not that friedmans are somewhat super specially great, but marshall seem to have become quite shit.
