After farming for 50 years I've begun my first ever soybean harvest. Waiting now for the frost to kill the remaining weeds. My little combine is handling the lousy field conditions well so far.

We had a 750 Massey on the farm back in the 90s. We are hobby farming now with a 4400 Deere. This was our first year with beans. We had green stems, green pods mixed in , and lots of pig weed. The little 4400 hundred chewed through it like a boss and gave a nice clean beans! Dad said the 750 wouldn’t have hacked it! Towards the end of his farming career (1999) green stems were becoming a real problem because genetics were changing. I definitely have a new respect for the 4400!

Well, looks like you have it figured out. Rotary screen worked good! They don't save all the seed, so yes, running the screenings over the fanning mill would be a good idea.. We don't worry about the smalls, they go with the rest of the screenings to get ground for feed.
@farmerpete3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yup, I just need to figure out a better way to keep the smalls gathered up so I can deal with them later.

“All in all not too bad considering I’d never harvested a soybean in my life before two days ago.” I hear ya! Two years ago we bought our first combine - a JD 55 corn special with a rigid grain head like you have on the 3300. Before that we’d always had a neighbor custom combine for us. I learned pretty quickly to go slow, and constantly be adjusting the header height to try to shave the ground. Picking the rocks is essential. The sickle bar on those heads has a square tube under it that they like to jam up against. There are a couple of brackets underneath that hang down, I think for converting the head to a belt pickup. They like to catch on the ground and plow things up too. I took them down with a grinder so I could get the head a little lower yet. It did as good a job as a flex header if you didn’t rush. Last thing, I leveled the feeder house in a way that the left side of the header was just slightly lower than the right side. Then I cut the crop in a clockwise fashion, so the left side was always out in the open a little where I could see and judge its height. I knew if I had that side nice and tight to the ground, the right side would be OK and not digging in. Happy harvesting!

Thanks for the updates & ride along. Good to see the Ol' John Deere combine cutting the soybeans. Glad to hear the grain cleaner is working for you. I see you're using an old wheel barrow tub as your auger hopper. Farmer Engineering at it's best. ROCK ON FARMER PETE!!!!!!

In the late 70's we had a cleaner like yours. Ran the cleaner with a pto connected to a Feterl auger.

Seems like it would be handy to have both auger and cleaner powered together.

Just watched Trinity Dairy test his corn that way yesterday. He doesn't have a high tech meter like Pete's. He was harvesting ears of corn. Thanks Pete. Hope you had some rest on your days away. If yours are anything like my travels, I needed to rest up a couple of days when I got home.

I really enjoyed watching this and hearing you tell the honest side of it all! I can truly relate to how you do things, as one I will dabble into the unknown of harvesting crops , hopefully 🤞😁🙏 I really like that cleaner, seems to be working well, other than the smaller brand as you stated. Thank you sir for bringing us along, and I am looking fwd to seeing more your harvest and operation!

U done alright for first time and good to go slow cause green beans and weeds will clog that thing bad
@SoybeanFarmer33003 жыл бұрын
Weeds can really Rob the yield out of an acre of soybean. A 3300 with its narrow feeder house is better suited to a 10ft wide grain head. So yes take it slow and you'll end up with a lot less headaches from clog ups. Thanks for the video Pete you know I'm always going to enjoy seeing your combine and your F600 in the same video. 🙂👍☕
@farmerpete3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You know, when I bought this the previous owner told me not to use the entire width of the head.

Great video - I struggle to wrap my mind around how a combine can take beans or corn, separate it and put the beans/corn in the hopper above.

Thanks! Yes, that operation requires a lot of moving parts.

Great to see the old combine working good 👍. And you couldn't get any better on moisture. If be fighting that green stuff in the field to keep that moisture myself. But the gleaner can deal with green a little better than the augers on the old 3300. The grain cleaner is awesome. Are you planning on keeping some for seed next year or is the grain elevator that picky about dirty grain. Around here you wouldn't get docked at all for that sample without cleaning it. Great video Pete. Looking forward to more.
@farmerpete3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The grain cleaner is one of those "I've got it now so I might as well use it" things. I have about 30 acres of transition fields (clover) that will be certified next year, planning on putting corn there, probably some beans the following year.

I'm looking at getting a grain cleaner. I saw one like yours. Will that help get rid of the hauls or is it just for little weed seed?
@farmerpete3 жыл бұрын
It just works on the little weed seeds. To do more I think you'll need a larger cleaner with two screened cylinders.
