Her extremely fast vibrato is not my cup of tea, but she is so talented and such an intelligent singer I can still enjoy her interpretation.

Much better a fast vibrato than a slow one -- the latter leads to wobble, and inability to trill or sing on pitch.

@@celibidache1000 you mean the vibrato or the trill? Cause if you really mean the vibrato, no singer can control it, since it's the voice being healthy and free and doing its own thing.

The rapid fire coloratura is the essence of Rossini. It is what makes it so exhilarating to listen to and even more so ,to sing and she obviously loves singing Rossini.

I admire some of Joyce's work but not this particular performance. The style is mannered and affected. There are some pitch issues (e.g. the very sharp note beginning at 5.11). Some of the high notes sound tight (e.g. the last two) and the vibrato is quite fast in places which adversely affects the legato. The first few pages are very drawn out such that momentum is lost early on and only sporadically gained with some of the later coloratura passages. All this adds up to a rather self-indulgent performance.

Actually I took your hint and did listen to Sutherland - there are a least half a dozen versions of her Bel Raggio available here - and this is my favourite! Those coloraturas are so effortless, fantastic! kzbin.info/www/bejne/opCWpZqerp6BqKM And her pitch is faultless. Incredible voice! But what I love about Joyce's interpretation is that she gives the aria DRAMA, she has given the role lots of thought and you can hear her (The Queen's) emotions.

Harold Hardin, you must remember that she was in Mexico City, and the place is many meters above sea level. It’s terribly complicated to breath if you’re not used to it. I was there during this concert and, at the end, before singing Cenerentolla, she ask forgiveness if it sounded breathy, because she was having difficulty breathing.

So many singers who don't have the requisite skill(s) to perform these types of florid pieces appropriately - which includes a certain elasticity of phrase tempo (not just slowing down for drama's sake, but also speeding up) that listeners have started to believe that the vanilla (boring) interp they are used to is the only correct one "Oh, it's too hard to sing this fast, so I'll just slow every thing down to meet *my* abilities"
