There is wonderful video essay called "When you tell an entire story in 9 minutes". It explains how Frieren is written and why it has no fillers. The writing follows something called "bracketed ideas". The show is structured in a way that it builds its setups very meticulously and preemptively which allows for the pay-off to be very satisfying and not artificially shoehorned afterwards. Not only this but the pay-offs does not end up there. They continues being explored and having impact in other episodes which add nuances to the themes, character and the world. And this is why there are no fillers in this show. Because everything - from Fern and Stark catching fish, to Frieren saying random quote like "I am used to loosing things" have meaning in the whole picture. Another thing is that the show is grounded and realistic. A lot of people fall into the trap of the anime tropes while watching it - expecting power levelling, flexing and screaming who is who, which lead to someone getting stronger etc. But here the struggles are internal. For example very few people noticed how throughout the series Fern was shown several times to pass very nervously between ridges on wooden logs. This represents her lack of confidence in herself. The relationships are very human like, instead of being hyperbolic and on the nose. Every action has consequences in the world the show is developed. For example Frieren saying "I know" to Fern in ep.17 when holding her hand for 2nd time. We were shown preemptively how Frieren still see Fern as a kid, it showed why Fern felt embarrassed, it gave us their perspectives and also added Stark's one and the origin of holding the hand. So when Frieren said this quote it was build comprehensively. There was no need of 5 mins of verbal explanation or internal dialog who feels what. We saw how the setup and payoffs were build in front of us. This is something which is hard to find in other animes. And I watched over 500 of them.

that last moment with frieren and her old party... just has to click for you. remember back in episode 1. frieren has a quick collage of memories with himmel and the party... and then we see himmel (like in the last episode) fading away while walking into a white background. then frieren starts crying. "tearful goodbyes aren't our style. after all, it would be embarrassing when we met again." she cried because that's it. they are not gonna meet again.

Lernen's attack shattered her defenses and wounded her. When she block her mimics massive zoltrakk it took a few seconds to break through and it barely scratched her! His attack had more power than her blast; maybe because it was concentrated, but its an amazing feat!

It's because the anime team overhyped Frieren in episode 26. The mimics zoltraak was NEVER that big in the manga, in fact it was the same size as Lernen's attack. Other stuff like her creating black holes and so on are anime only additions too

If I had to guess Frieren’s zoltrakk is specialized for killing demons, Learnen’s might be specialized for killing mages.

After finishing the series, when I re-watched the episode where Frieren goes hand Flamme's will to Serie I noticed how you can see that Serie cannot understand or admit that she cares for her students. Her words about Flamme, that are harsh and seem cold and careless are contradictory with the memory she has of her, a cute, happy little girl that she held by the hand while listening her talk about her dreams.

The only anime i watch multiple reactions of is this and AoT. They both conjure a lot of emotions and leave a lasting impression. The thing they have in common aside from fantastic OST's is they are both such well written original stories with amazing characters and growth. I've seen a lot of anime but these two stick out to me. Even among other great ones like FMA, Stein's Gate and Samurai Champloo. Anytime someone asks me my favorite anime, i say Non Non Biori. Purely because of the humor, the country ambience, especially the sounds and just the comfort i feel when watching it. But In all honesty, in my opinion, granted there's only one season... Frieren is the best anime I've seen.

Lernen is my favorite character in the series and I'm so happy with your analysis on his tragic relationship with Serie. Thank you so much for your thoughts on it and I very much agree. Based on the pole on Patreon, are you guys watching Solo Leveling next? I really hope not, it's so mid compared to other options in the pole. IMO, Arcane would be great for a short break from anime on the main channel, since there are only 18 episodes, you guys can finish it quickly in 2-3 weeks then move on to a new show.
