Glad to see your posting again . I really enjoy watching your vids. Even went and rewatched all of your old ones. I just starting with free hand, and the results are disappointing not to sure what i doing wrong. For some reason I can get a my bevel right pushing away. But when I do the other side it’s all jacked up. Any advice?
@Yokatosh4 жыл бұрын
Try switching hands for that side. I have the same issue my backhand sucks; I can't get a even finish to save my life but for whatever reason my left hand pushing away from me gets a nice consistent finish. You can see davis using both hands in this video.
@jdavis8824 жыл бұрын
Chris J that’s a good tip. Use your other hand for the side of the blade that you’re inconsistent with. It will feel awkward at first, but it does give you more control. Once you get the bevel set with your other hand, you can switch back to doing both sides with one hand if you choose. I find once I set the bevel, I can match that angle pretty well on both front and back strokes. Using feel/sound feedback from the stones should let you know if you’re matching the bevel correctly. And just so I’m clear, when you say back strokes you mean coming towards you or away from you? If you’re sharpening a Spyderco, do you mean you have trouble on the side with the Spyder logo, or the other side? And are you using your right or left hand to hold the knife? Hopefully we can help.

+Very glad to see you back. After the very fine diamond you went to the white ceramic but there is another finer diamond at 3 micron or 8000 mesh. Why did you not use it and how does that last diamond stone compare with the white ceramic? Thank you for all your videos. I learned a great deal about sharpening but am always amazed at what you can do.
@jdavis8823 жыл бұрын
The ultra fine and UUF stones from DMT never give me a great finish. All the ones I’ve tried seem to have little clumps of diamond that impede a nice keen finish. I’ve gotten better results from quality ceramics up until this point. I’ve been testing some new vitrified diamond stones for gritomatic and they are amazing. Definitely my go to choice now for finishing very hard, or high carbide steels. 👍🏻

Call me old fashioned, but I'm still in love with my Delica's VG-10, although I love my V-Toku2 Endura for stropping ease. VG-10 just takes such a nice fine edge. Looking forward to the new Stretch pattern in that steel.

Oozy9Millimeetah oh wow, thank you for letting me know. Sounds like the cladding steel isn’t hard enough to support the core steel. Maybe I’ll pass on those. Wonder if it’s a wide spread issue or not? I need to test my Hap40 endura to see if I can bend it.

You should do a review on the Smith’s tri-hone. It’s about $24 and it’s great for beginners. They have a diamond stone version but it’s more expensive. I’d love to see the kind of edge you could get on the basic $24 version.

I use windex with the smiths trip home and sharpen my smaller knives to exceptional edge. I have shaptons, dmt’s, choseras and others but always come back to the smith tri hone. Mostly because I can beat it up and not care because it’s affordable.

Just curious - has dmts QC gotten any better over the last few years? I have purchased stones in the past that had 'bare' spots or lack if diamonds on the edges of the plate. Dmt does leave a clean crisp apex, but years ago the QC was shoddy. I wonder how eze lap stones are?
@jdavis8824 жыл бұрын
I certainly hope so, because I have noticed the exact things you mentioned and I am literally about to make a video removing them from my recommendations. Why is the whole side of the blade all scratched up? It doesn’t look like that style of sharpening would do that! You only touched the edge of the blade on the stone! Was that from something previous that was done to the side of the blade or did someone else try their hand at sharpening?
@jdavis8824 жыл бұрын
It’s from me doing a regrind. I did a complete regrind and thinned this knife out a lot, but I had some high spots. Instead of going back to the belt I flattened the high spots with a coarse stone and never bothered to clean the scratches up. Good eye!
