Voles are also unable to go through obsidian tiles (very hard materials basically). This makes very early stables relatively easy to build.

Put the doors in the ceiling voles will puke in the door then dig through it before the auto miner can get a chane , the more shovoles in the ranch the more likely it is to happen. And it will, and they will destroy anything they touch.

I had no idea they worked like that, I found dropping hot oil on rails of algae to be a way cheaper way to make natural tiles

Not sure if the numbers have been updated since this was posted, but if they live 100 cycles and each death gives 20 meals (if barbequeued), the maths isn't exactly very hard (i.e., you need 1 dead vole every 20 cycles, which means 100/20 = 5 voles per duplicant if you intend to use them as the only source of food).
