Lots of people not digging the vocoder - I am one of them. It never inspires confidence. It disconnects us from the singer, because it introduces a significant gap between what the singer is doing and what we end up hearing. Maybe this alienating effect is the point; I thought the lyrics about control combined with the vocoder effect, which essentially amounts to a loss of control over the voice (everything gets spat out on pitch, no matter what you do) was interesting. But again, I can’t tell if this was an accident or a deliberate choice. The vocoder makes intention so hard to assess. But even if it was deliberate it did not feel like it was consistently executed.
