Who are we to comment when Handel thought enough of this aria to use it twice ? Edit - I forgot to mention how grateful I am to Jeffrey for the great work he has done with so many beautiful arias, translating the lyrics, choosing the artwork and editing the whole thing. You are an artist yourself Jeffrey

Oh, I’ve heard an alto version of this aria from “the Choice of Hercules”, without the dance-like triple-beat B section. I must say I prefer this soprano version. I only know of this “Alceste”, the incidental music to the play, by fragments: its overture, and a tenor aria. Wonder how much more is there to it, in its entirety.
@JeffreyStivers4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the entirety of Alceste? It's just a little over an hour. There are at least 2 recordings: Christopher Hogwood and Christian Curnyn.
@jasonkim55034 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Stivers I’ve heard an aria from it sung by Mark Padmore in his Handel aria album, and I thought it was such a beautiful aria. And this number is also gorgeous, albeit I had heard it before from another work as I mentioned. Now those “Alceste” recordings you mentioned will be on my purchase list. Which would you recommend of the two? They both are superb Handelians. Something tells me the Hogwood recording must be on a budget price on iTunes. LOL
@JeffreyStivers4 жыл бұрын
@@jasonkim5503 I would recommend the Curnyn recording. I've made 3 other videos of arias from that recording: Ye swift minutes as ye fly, Enjoy the sweet Elysian grove (which is the one you heard on Padmore's recital disc), and Ye fleeting shades, I come.

Handel was a great humanist...in a letter to Victor Hugo , Victor Schoelcher, who was then writing his "life of Handel" in London after having been forced to exile , wrote that Handel was considered as a "red" by some members of the nobility...
