Even before the violence you can see signs that this is an abusive relationship. First he buys a house quite far away from where all his friends live, even though he doesn't have a car, thus isolating him. Then he finds excuses to avoid letting him spend time with his friends. He also seems to read his partner's texts. He is obviously controlling because he tells him what to wear, confiscates his phone and checks up on him to make sure he isn't going out. He uses coercive tactics to control him, such as slamming things. Also, why is the house so clean? Is he feeling pressured to meet his boyfriend's exacting standards?

No you are not the only one. I saw my first foriegn language film when I was a student at Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA in 1978. I took a movie appreciation class & to get extra credit our teacher told us about a movie that was in French. "Jules Et Jim". When I had access to Turner Classic Movies, I saw several films with subtitles & they were wonderful! From beautiful Senoia, Georgia.

First of all I congratulate everyone associated with this excellent and sadly beautiful movie. Both guys are cool. It is indeed a sorrow that Sam abused Loius in that way. Insecurity and jealousy is portrayed so beautifully. Louis is helpless in being treated that way but he is trapped because he is not economically independent. His conversation at the phone booth is heart wrecking. Sam's acting is also very good. Hats off to the filmaker and director. 18:56

Louis had to suffer because he was not finantially independent. Not a working guy, rather a party boy! The lesson is: If you want to be in a partnership, you have to earn your own money and keep a good grade of reliance and self-estime. An abuser can abuse only when he have power to do it.

Hey I'm the director of this short film! No, Louis didn't murder Sam at the end, but sadly he wasn't able to leave him either, thinking maybe it was his fault that the two fought. Domestic violence is a vicious cycle, and we wanted to show that, sadly, it's not always easy to get out of it, and that's why friends and family have to stay alert to signs too. First, the organization that sponsored the film ( MIELS-Québec ) caters to people living with HIV, and they felt their reality is seldomly seen on screen. It was important to me to show that Louis could live a perfectly normal life with his HIV medication. But most importantly, people living with HIV are more at risk of being victims of domestic violence. HIV status can be used as a lever of manipulation and control by their abusers. There is still a stigma about HIV, and a lot of people fear they will be left alone and not find anyone else if they leave their abusive partner. Sometimes people have not told their families, friends, coworkers about their status, and their abuser could threaten to out them. They can also be more direct and shame them about their status, or control how they take their medication.This is what's happening here. Sam is constantly infantilizing Louis by reminding him that he has to take his medication, and then when he has a fight, he tries to further dominate Louis by using his HIV status against him.
