After studying martial arts intensively from the age of ten, Van Damme achieved national success, also earning the "Mr. Belgium" bodybuilding title. His styles consist of Kickboxing, Shotokan Karate, Muay Thai and Taekwondo. He earned his black belt in karate and was only knocked down once in his fighting career, facing Sherman Bergman, being knocked to the canvas after absorbing a powerful left hook. However, he got up, and with an axe-kick, knocked Bergman out in 56 seconds of the first round.
