Not an overly big or tall guy so he moves with speed and fluidity, along with the kicks and flexibility with his longer legs and muscular physique, he really seemed larger than life on screen. The heavy contact karate tournaments he won were considered "kickboxing" in his country, but it's not the same level sport that Chuck Norris and Don Wilson won championships in. I never cared, I like those guys but Van Damme's style looked the most impressive in movies.

@Cassie Thornburgtrue , he was mostly a Karateka in real life although he claims to have received some Ninjutsu training as a young boy by one of his uncle's maybe ? I don't remember. And I believe his name was Yamoto. But I did hear for a fact he did do a little training with Shoto Tanemura, the founder of the Genbukan Ninjutsu system. He was a student of master Hatsumi in Japan before he started his own school. Although Kosugi may not be a real ninja they are.

@Cassie Thornburg I am aware of the arts he was trained in and obviously he is a martial artist. I never said he was ninja but he has some training in it apparently. The Bujinkan is controversial ? It's the most well known system and most likely the most authentic school teaching Ninjutsu compared to other teachers who claim to know it. I am open minded though and don't believe they are the only ninja school left. I am pretty sure there were other ryu that survived and keep more of a low profile. People can say that this is fraudulent and that is fraudulent but that doesn't prove anything and is not a fact. When it comes to Ninjutsu who can really say ?

One of my favorite Jean-Claude Van Damme scenes, he did really fantastic fight scenes in the early years especially imo. Sho Kosugi was great I used to watch his ninja movies as a boy in the 80's. JCVD with Bruce Lee we're my role models and they gave me a passion for martial arts when I was young.

I was watching Sho Kosugi from the 1981 in "Enter The Ninja", then "Nine Deaths of a Ninja" in 1985, before Jean Claude Van Damme, ever started doing movies, so i got real excited about this movie , cause i knew that they were bringing the old and the new together for a great martial arts battle. Black Eagle was a pretty cool movie, wasn't as good as i was hoping for when the movie came out in the 1988, but by then I knew Van Damme, cause he did No Retreat No surrender in 85' and he also did Bloodsport in 88'.

I've seen some of vandams training kicks footage gym. He come up with a roundhouse kick to the face all I gotta say Is you better not be there! His foot slaps and it sounds like a gun shot going off! He hit a man's face it will be getting a face lift the hard way! Van dam no doubt better than Norris, Segal, Bolo young, scott atkins and Stathom and Bill Wallace in,their prime but not better than Lee or Chan or Jamal White in their prime.

@@jasonjones9843 Of Course i seen it and i saw it in a Movie theater with friends and i was barely allowed into it because i was a teen and it did not allow kids due to violence but i still managed to get being in company.Actually in the 1st Main Ninja movie (Enter the Ninja)he lost in the End to Franco Nero the white ninja because he was the Protagonist,apart from that he would always be better in movies he starred.So like i mentioned he never actually met his match in hand to hand combat in his movies,they did used tricks and weapons to hurt him and he was hit occasionally but none would be his match in hand to hand shodown.

Beau combat Sho Kosuki vs Jean Claude Van Damme. Cette scène, je l'ai vu des centaines de fois, excellent cette chorégraphie de Karaté. Cela me rappelle les jeux vidéos. ( Vidéos Games of 1980 / 1990. ) Je rejoue sur ces jeux là avec mes consoles portables dernière génération. PS Vita PSP ou DS !!!

Era visto na época como um ator classe C, e sem potencial para ser um ator classe A. Mais deu sorte com o mega sucesso bloodspot que lhe deu fama repentina e lhe proporcionou grandes produções nós anos 90 como Ard target, soldado universal, Time Cop e stret figtht. Além de outros filmes de menor orçamento como duplo impacto e death warrant. Enfim esse ator apesar de ser bastante famoso por aqui no Brasil sua carreira é cheia de altos e baixos, prova disso é que sua maior bilheteria é de time Cop o guardião do tempo com uma arrecadação de 101 milhões de dólares. Se comparado a Stallone e Schwarzenegger ele perde feio em termos de bilheteria.

Sim é verdade, em termos de bilheteria ele perde feio pra Stallone e Schwarzeneger Mas eu gosto muito do trabalho dele, fora esses filmes que você citou, tem o retroceder nunca render-se jamais, que foi o primeiro filme dele que ele nem tinha fama, aí teve Leão Branco, Kickboxer, Desafio Mortal, Cyborg, O Alvo, Inferno, só que o Filme de mais sucesso dele foi o Bloodspot (O grande dragão branco) foi o que abriu as portas

Good editing there...i believed that was his first appearance with Sho Kosugi. He wanted to make it to Hollywood which he did, after that he got a little cocky in his years .I remember in one of his movies he injured a stuntman, on a set of a movie that cause him to get blind in one eye.The stuntman sue him for compensation of his injury , Sean Claude lost the case.This what happens when you go too far.

I saw this movie a couple of times many years ago. It was pretty dreary for the most part, and it seemed like a big step-down for VanDamme at that time as he had just starred in "BloodSport" prior to doing this cheapie,but those 2 fight scenes were undoubtably memorable. It just never ceases to amaze me though that This film was made right after Bloodsport. Yeah,VanDamme's cheapie "Cyborg" flick came out right after this,and then the highly redeeming blockbuster flick "Kickboxer". And as for Sho,yeah i was actually quite a fan of his back in the day as well,and this was a step-down for him as well no doubt,but just not as dramatic of a step-down,as he was never really blockbuster material,but he was definately an Icon in the spectrum of Ninja-Flicks of the 1980's,and obviously a highly revered Ninjitsu master as well.

They came out the same year so he would've already been committed to do this movie long before everyone realised what a success bloodsport was. Kickboxer is probably a better example of what came out of the bloodsport success.

At the time....VD was just trying to be seen/have exposure in different movies and display his powerful and graceful karate/kickboxing and bad guy charisma. Black Eagle was really a micro step up...
