what she says from 2:35 is the main point. they are two totally different artists with two different views and paths in the industry. no disrespect, but nicki was better before she signed with young money. real talk. her mixtapes were a lot better than what she has now. Jean is being smart about it, staying underground. the industry has a habit of destroying good artists like her. Thats why smart emcees like her, rita j, phonte, rhymefest, etc. stay underground, so they dont lose their identity.

clashofthetitans03 well u guys who complain about the state of female hip hop should start supporting the girls u think deserve to be on top. Stop illegally downloading music and actually purchase their material. Record execs look at NUMBERS. Doesnt matter how talented one may be. If u are not moving units u are not bringing profit. So stop supporting garbage.
@clashofthetitans0311 жыл бұрын
I don't fully understand your comment about supporting garbage. Nowhere in my comment did I say Niki was garbage and neither did Jean. What I simply said is that the industry sets it up where only one female can be successful at a time, which is sexist. So it doesn't matter that I buy Jean Grae or Nicki Minaj, there is a mentality in the industry that only ONE female rapper can be on top at a time. For example, you have Common and you have Meek Mill. You have Nas and you have Drake. So for males in the industry, at least there is a little bit of balance.It's not about Jean being better than Nicki or vice versa. There is room for both.

i think that comparing Jean Grae to Nikki Minaj is like comparing Nas to lil wayne. The analogy is so perfect Jean/Nas inspirational and progressive talented MC's, while lil wayne/Nikki are more Pop stars that are popular because of there general lyrics (ignorant, pointless lyrics). its just how many people get the music

Yeah she's probly thinking she could have went the minaj route and sold a ton of records. But the reward is rather superficial that route. Jean has die hard ride or die fans that will be with her for life, whereas nicki minaj's spotlight will probably fade within a few years.
@Soknik0112 жыл бұрын
While I personally prefer the more intellectual content offered by less "popular" artists, theres plenty of evidence that it's a very intelligent move to dumb down your shit in the interest of moving albums. No way in hell is nicki is writing to her potential. She's guiding her career in the pursuit of profit. It doesn't appeal to my tastes but Its hard not to recognize the underlying talent and respect her choice to make more money at her profession. Ya know? Id be tempted to do the same.

It is a misguided and misogynistic idea that only one female rapper can be successful at a time and not a Nicki Minaj and Jean Grae simultaneously. That is such BS. They don't even do the same kind of music so it really is like comparing apples to oranges. There is room and an audience for both to exist. Just like men have been doing in the rap industry for years. It is this inherently sexist and capitalistic industry that says there can only be one or the other.

Jean is not stressing this issue. As long as Nicki doesn't say anything that disrespects Jean don't expect anything from Jean and visa versa. I don't even know why people think Jean should be nominated. She's a Underground artists. She's rarely been on the radio if even. No disrespect but BET wouldn't put her on if they wanted to because most people don't know who she is. Fact. It's like putting Drafting a local High School Quarterback.
@Soknik0112 жыл бұрын
Listen to money makers like Jay and eminem talk about how writing simple and shallow bullshit is where the money is at and how writing like the sickest MC ever (Talib, Mos Def, Nas) isn't going to appeal to the naive masses. Some of the more mainstream artists have the capacity to produce 20x better content but they decide that they are in the business to make money and they don't have an urge to stay true to an inner artist or set of principles like Jean here, and that's understandable.
