Dad this was our favorite movie. When I had you on the phone for the last time. I played this for you and the nurse told me that you stopped well moaning in pain. I knew you heard me. The next conversation our last conversation I told you that I loved you; you were in so much pain you said I love you too. You opened your eyes for 2 seconds. I told you that "God was calling you home. I started crying so hard; and in all of the pain you were in you mumbled :Don't Cry, I told you daddy you can let go know. And in 3 seconds you did. I want to thank you for that. It has been over 25 days. I asked you last night to please come into my dreams. You did not. But I had a packaage at the door I smelled your smell. I felt warmth. I sat on the doorway and Just talked to you. Thank you for that Dad. Thank you for being my Dad. But most of all with all of this going on you still reach out to me. You taught me everything I know.

The look, when his wife realises who Rowena is. A wife always knows when something is different about her partner. She knew he had replaced his dream of being a famous composer for another, being a father and husband to their family. She knew that he was struggling and at a crossroads. To leave and make music or stay.. The look on her face when she listened to this song, broke my heart. She loves her husband. She knows that even if its just an emotional affair he's having, he is facing a choice. So is she...her heart is breaking.. Whew... The complexity of this scene. This was a real crossroads in the movie. .. still one of my favs..

This was the best scene in the film for me (along with the scene waiting for the bus). To me, I never saw Glenn's interest in Rowena as romantic. He let her go easily enough. It was what she represented that was so profound. Glenn dreamed of being a professional musician. Instead, he found himself anchored in a life he never asked for, in a profession he began out of necessity -- though one he came to accept in some way. Then here comes Rowena. She's beautiful; she's dreamy-eyed; she has an angelic voice and a zeal to turn it into something; she is his dream, in living flesh. She's also his last chance to pursue that dream. That is why his decision to stay with his family is so poignant. It's one thing to accept reality and let go of a dream when it's far away. When it's at your fingertips and you can taste it, that is when it takes an incredible amount of fortitude to turn away. Holland didn't stay with his wife and son because he was forced; he stayed because he CHOSE to -- for the first time, in actual fact. That's fucking powerful.

This is also why I love the wife's response when he says I love you after coming back from the bus stop, and she says "I Know." She knew he was struggling with his emotions, and knew something was up, but she never really questioned that he loved his family and would come home. It is an affirmation in her trust of him.

A perfect example of an artist and his muse. Mr. Holland was in love with what she embodied. She brought a necessary catalyst to his life at a crossroads, inspired him again. As many people as are bothered by the under-current between them, it was never to be. He gave her the freedom to be what she was meant to be, a chance he never really had; she was a fresh breeze that woke him up again. The intent was never to leave his wife; even if he had left, it would have been the dream he followed, not the girl. But in the end, he made the right choice.

This song in and of itself packs powerful emotions and needs into it on several levels, but when it is performed like this it takes on its own life, begging the listener, no, demanding that the listener apply the implications to their own life. I extraed in this movie in several scenes, including being in the audience for this scene. It took about twelve hours of filming to shoot this scene, and I probably heard her perform this song forty times. (Each angle you see in a movie is a separate take and there are multiple takes from every angle.) Rowena's seductiveness aimed at Mr Holland was obvious even way back in the audience. And I remember when the cameraman came down and shoved the big camera lens into the face of the wife, like a foot from her face, and held it there for the entire song. I could only see the back of her head but could imagine her expression. We extras had to be there two hours early so that wardrobe could give us all period clothes. So for the extras it was a more than fourteen hour day. (Yes, they paid us, minimum wage.) We also were all given programs like the one the wife looks at to see Rowena's name. Except for the page shown on screen, the rest of the program was taken from some real school show. The programs made good fans because it was extremely hot. The high school orchestra was portrayed by the Portland Youth Philharmonic. They had a real conductor working just off camera.

Thanks for this information. Having done BG myself, I know it can be long days. And she did the song 40 times? Man, she must've gotten tired at some point. This was 1980 in this scene so I can't see needing older clothing.
