The knee action speed is incredible. His Upper body facing down the fall line. Skis are tight together. The pole action- plant and push off the top of every mogul. Perfection.

Brassard's technique is everlasting, his style as well. His speed would hold even today. I watched WCh 1997 and fell off the chair how fast he was also there, looked as today but here absolutely flawless skiing in that speed. Huge respect!

What strikes me, aside from his ROM, is the amount of twist he generates to get the skis turning quickly. Definitely one of the greatest.

I’ve lived In Killington Vermont for 32 years. Jean Luc showed up here in 92 I think and kicked all the local bumpers butts in our mogul challenge.

This is a great edit! I started watching old Greg Stump movies a few years ago and got completely obsessed with Fistful of Moguls. JLB is mentioned briefly but I've never seen this much footage of him. Incredible!

Greg Stump made awesome movies! I used to watch them all the time. Also I collect many old videos from Japan... When I am there I look for them and this is where you can get all this great footage of guys like Brassard. In Japan they document so much skiing from all the worlds best over the last 30 years and it is a great recource.

it's good to see someone ski real moguls. I don't think wathing people ski those perfectly symmetrical and evenly spaced manicured competition bumps translates perfectly well to the weird misshaped and variable moguls we see and ski in real life

Ohhhhh......greatest of all time. Yup. Great analysis. Great vid. Thanks for posting! Agree with notion that current WC setup is conducive to tediously uniform technique. Hence, the aerials competition that's been inserted -- and the fully inverted airs are boring to me! Plus, where does it end? (risking death twice per run in the name of "progression"?) If anyone's still out there, I'd love to hear thoughts on the mechanics of getting your tips down between bumps -- another thing JLB does so well (when necessary and/or just for pure aesthetics). I find it nearly impossible to self-analyze this when I'm skiing well so that I can consciously practice mechanics in other situations when I'm not (extremely flat light).

I had a little trouble with the idea of pulling my feet back during absorption. What helped me was another video floating around youtube (tgellie?) where he suggests focusing on rotating/thrusting the pelvis forward. It was a little disconcerting when I first tried it out because you're pushing your hips forward right as you're coming over the crest and looking down the steepest part of the bump (the back). I almost felt like I was going to fall down the hill. But it improved my ski/snow contact and really gets the tips down. Now it feels very comfortable.

Reilly, in your blog article you mention Edgar Grospiron who was 3rd at Lille-hammer. What about Sergei Choupletsov who was 2nd? (Sadly, he died shortly after that.) There's about a 1/2 hour vid on Sergi called "сhoupletsov full film". Also, anything coming up on mogul skiing on Projected Productions How To Ski series?

The algorithms... :-) Yes, Choupletsov needs some recognition! Personally, I would say that Choupletsov had a greater impact on the sport than JLB. I don't wanna take anything away from JLB, he's a fantastic skier, but in his heyday Choupletsov jumped one mogul further than anyone else on the tour, did quads with perfect distinction, and was a couple seconds faster than anyone else... Then Jonny M came along and then the Finns :-)

Do you think Olympic mogul skiing would be more interesting if the bumps weren’t so perfect? And do you think his slightly straighter skis make it a little easier in comparison to the wider tipped slalom skis that you would use in the tech champs etc?

I loved watching mogul skiing when i was a kid... not so much now, I still watch the old stuff now though... my 183cm 25m GS skis are pretty similar to the old skis... some things are easier on them and some are harder... the shapes of moguls have also changed now too from when i was a kid so it's hard to compare directly...

Reilly McGlashan currently I am on a old set of Volkl Sport Carve skis... was thinking of the Head V Shape V8 to upgrade. As you identified - my ooops crossed my tips for a sec - the shape skis seem to have made moguls on the mountain choppy -

@@sunsetsilvy if you are used to a narrower older ski then I would get a narrow carve ski something under 70mm underfoot for carving... I never skied the Vshape so I cannot comment if they are good or not. I would suggest testing some different skis out to figure out what you like personally.

yup - you can see a video of him on his Instagram doing it and throwing in a backflip - this was last year at 49yrs old - outside of the WorldCup, there still isn't a better-looking mogul skier

Typical BOGUS description of how to ski bumps. A genuine description would be like how intricated dance steps are taught. Example(not literal): reach right pole here, step onto outside left ski, step inside right ski, reach over mogul with left pole, compress over mogul, extend as you pass over...That IMO is how describing bump skiing should be done, not the adhoc way done here as is typical.

At jumps Mikael is many levels above Brassard...His mogul skiing is not at the level of Brassards... it is not Mikaels fault though, he has trained specifically for the task at hand which is to win the modern WC mogul system. All these moves that I point out in this video, modern WC mogul skiing lacks... The Zipperline technique in the first clip is really the only thing needed to win WC moguls now... Very specific with little room for wiggle... Brassards versatility is on a different level which is actually what "free" "style" is about and unfortunately kids training for mogul competitions these days pretty much stay in man made mogul courses... As Reilly alluded to, the current rules that govern the World Cup and Olympics are fundamentally different than when Jean Luc Brassard was competing. Back in Brassard's day, inverted tricks such as backflips were banned by FIS. Jonny Moseley (who won the Gold medal in Nagano), finished a disappointing 4th place in Salt Lake City 4 years later. Many observers believed the judges came down hard on him after he threw down his Dinner Roll trick, which pushed the rules to their very limit. Ironically, one year later in 2003, FIS allowed inverted tricks. I think Jean Luc would have been able to adapt well to the current style of competition. I think most of the past great athletes would be dominant in today's era, given better training protocols, equipment, coaching, nutrition, etc. Reilly : Cheers for posting the video. Great stuff.

There are many small hills that only source for moguls is pusking a course with a cat and many large mountains with too much snow cant get enough skiers skiing them to make legit bumps, but there are many place where we learn on natural bumps much before being in any sort of course. In my home mountain of Killington Resort there are endless people that push the mountain to leave trails ungroomed and untouched.
