“I didn’t snatch them.” They just sort of caught my eye... and I took them.” The brilliance of his ‘art’ in all forms was/is contagious. His play on words was incomparable, he was a beautiful asset to this world. May his life and artistry live on forevermore.

I used to hang out there and go to shows when I was 13, 14, 15 years old because I grew up in Stuyvesant Town and was a graffiti and hip hop junkie. I still have my black book from those days with Futura, Tracy 168, Dondi, T-kid and many other writers in it. I still go to graffiti events to this day. I had such a crush on Patti.

One of the better interviews, I would say. It’s hard to find a good Basqiuat interview where the interviewer isn’t racist or annoying. Although there definitely is a disconnect(which there will almost always be between a genius like Basquiat), he’s much more talkative and seems happy in this discussion.

I saw all of the Fun Gallery shows--many times--because I lived on the block. Basquiat's show was particularly memorable, because it brought Graffiti Artists from all over the city to East 10th Street for the show, and of course, after the show they all 'tagged' the block. It was great the next morning to see all the fresh graffiti up & down the entire block!

If he was white they wouldn’t have called him a graffiti artist- he would have been given the uncommon appellation of “ genius “. Rip JM.

Man, your victimhood is hilarious. They called him genius and everyone in the art scene called him genius. And he was a graffiti artist too and of course they named that too, that is not a way to undermine his genius. He called himself a graffiti artist too. Actually with your assumptions it is you who is undermining graffiti art and graffiti artists

Does anyone knows what religion was Basquiat? I see paintings of his that has Prodigal son story from Bible but I also see vodou stuff and wikipedia says that he was raised catholic... so which one was it, its confusing... or he probably transitioned by leaving 1 and choosing other. I wanna see Basquiat in Heaven and JESUS is the only way to Heaven, Basquiat had to know that because he read Bible looks like and also GOD informs everyone in this but not forces.

| all interviews of basquiat are tragedies - stupid ass belittling questions and readings of his work - i just ... am so frustrated | unfortunately basquiat is being sincere with them and i see the frustration with them , where as bob dylan and john lennon recognized and made fun of the interviewers to their faces because of how their questions were - such as asking Why they did something rather than what is it doing

hey stevie. the fact remains that the artwork is terrible to you but there is no objectivity to it. it may be worth less than shit in your eyes, but to someone else it could be worth millions of dollars (which is the case here as his artworks go far crazy prices - including one which sold for $110 million). and this is the beauty of art, there is no bad or good art, there is only what you like. which you're allowed to like whatever you want buddy.

and listen stevie i don't mean to lecture. i mean i care about your opinions, i do. i just think as a species we shouldn't put down those who create, we can constructively critique sure, but if we don't understand something we should hesitate to ridicule it. that's a dangerous thing in a society. you know, not every woman will strike your fancy but that doesn't mean we have to poke fun at them, we can just move on to the next. i'm sure someone would find whatever it was you found unattractive the polar opposite.
