Jean-Michel Basquiat was an artist in the most plural sense. Commonly misunderstood as just a 'graffiti artist', or a painter, Basquiat was also a musician, DJ, actor and performance artist.
On the occasion of the Barbican's major Basquiat exhibition, which ran between September 2017 and January 2018, curator Eleanor Nairne exposes how Basquiat's multidisciplinary nature springs from his profound engagement with a broad range of source material, from trashy TV, to philosophy, to media representations of black experience.
Nairne unpicks some of the fertile references which feature in canvases by the pioneering prodigy of the 1980s downtown New York art scene. She discusses how Basquiat could have brought these disparate sources together to critique and shed new light on the world around him.
Could the webs of references which feature in Basquiat's works parallel our contemporary experience of the digital age?

The dude was a true enigma. Born from a time when the mystery of celebrity was at an all time high. I’m convinced nobody actually knows the full him. His family knows the background. Different people know him from different stages. Only he knew the full scope of his life and his work. To me, that’s what makes him so interesting. His work is incredibly autobiographical as well as social commentary but he never explained any of it past the surface level. A true artist. 🙏🏾

great video! I love the segment on his portrait alongside thelonius and his heros, interpreting as basquiat placing himself with the greats was a cool take

She really hit the nail on the head. I really appreciate the thoughtful analysis of his work. I’m hoping the discourse on Basquiat’s work continues in the art history realm

I went to the Met for the first time the other day, and was unfortunately locked to only seeing what I could fit into a time slot. Of all the many things, I greatly regret not seeing a Basquiat work.

Wonderful and educational video. I loved seeing some of the source material edited in with the paintings. I wonder if Jean-Michel would have enjoyed the internet if he was still aound.

Perhaps his reference to Superman, in that olympics painting, was Nietzschean ideals of anti-egalitarianism, the Superman, that the Nazis hijacked.

i did my doctorate on this dude. the way i see it, warhol was starting to get stacked with cash, nothing better to do. so he found basquiat and took him in as a pet project. kid wasnt fit for the art scene. too wild, drug addition, no true artistic skill. right place at the right time. imo, very overrated. he would be nobody without warhol, and warhol himself is overrated to begin with.
