Wrong. He loved, LOVED money. He did everything to get fame and be noticed by rich colectors. Stop making him seem deeper that he really was. Dont get me wrong, he was a GREAT artist, but he didnt paint just to express himself. He wanted to be famous like Worhol, he wanted to be rich like Warhol.

Most buyers willing to pay this much money don't even appreciate artworks, they often choose them if name is fashionable. They are on display to show power and wealth until another toy becomes more interesting. It doesn't seem they have capability to understand that his works was interpretation of inner feelings about colonialism and class struggle, yet they pay millions and millions. This is probably why Jean-Michel chose the name "Dustheads" :)

Paintings increase in value when the artist dies. Not sure if Basquiat's work would be as value if he were still alive. Maybe so, A best selling David Hockney went for just under $95m.

no fakes are sold by the big dealers. unbeknownst to many - most of basquiats work was bought by private collectors back in the 80s. the big galleries didn't like jean's work in the 80s. most of his most famous painting were sold to regular people and are held in private collections.

If you think Jean-Michel died broke, think again. He was making hundreds of thousands of dollars a week being high and painting whatever he felt like. He did whatever he wanted to do every day, all day long. I think he actually felt guilty because he used to throw hundred dollar bills out of the windows of cabs to poor people. So no, he did not die broke.
