I'd say that if you read the story closely, you'll see, narrated through some of the characters, what Sartre thinks about patriotism and socialism in the Spanish Civil War. Wellll. . . Not sure I'd agree with that myself. He seems to me a lot like the main character in his novel, The Age of Reason. I thin k if I was an atheist, and I was looking for an existentialist hero, I'd more likely pick Camus, or Sartre's partner, De Beauvoir

In a word, Yes. Sartre articulated public stances on these, and on other post-colonial conflicts, and engaged many other intellectuals about them
