In this video, I examine some of the philosophical themes involved in Jean-Paul Sartre's short story The Wall, particularly the confrontation with one's own death and its differing effects on the human beings forced to experience it.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. For whatever reason I really struggle in a traditional academic setting. I lose focus and can't apply myself in a classroom or lecture hall, but I love learning. People like you allow me to educate myself and even though I don't get an academic award for doing so, it improves my life. For that I thank you!

You're very welcome! Glad the videos are useful for you -- and there's a term for the sort of education you've got in mind here: "lifelong learning", they typically call it

Glad you liked the video. I don't generally do that sort of paper assistance on my KZbin video or channels. I'd say that if you read the story closely, you'll see, narrated through some of the characters, what Sartre thinks about patriotism and socialism in the Spanish Civil War. If you're interested in tutoring -- which I do engage in -- you can email info@reasonio.com

Thanks a lot for posting this lecture. This really helped me get a better understanding of this story and much of the meaning behind it. Your reading and analysis is a big help in preparing me to write my literary analysis on The Wall, and I appreciate that very much!

Wellll. . . Not sure I'd agree with that myself. He seems to me a lot like the main character in his novel, The Age of Reason. I thin k if I was an atheist, and I was looking for an existentialist hero, I'd more likely pick Camus, or Sartre's partner, De Beauvoir

In a word, Yes. Sartre articulated public stances on these, and on other post-colonial conflicts, and engaged many other intellectuals about them

genius piece of work, Greg! Thank you! I'm writing an assignment about socialism versus patriotism in Spain and France, and I thought The Wall could provide me with some of Sartre's thought on that subject. Can you help me in finding something helpful in the short story? Something that says something about socialism and political orientation? Thanks a lot. :)
