I've listened to more interpretations than I could possibly count and this Icelandic orchestra has finally brought to me the understanding of this symphony that has eluded me. Breathtaking clarity and revelatory dynamics. My god! This confirms to me that this and the 7th are my absolute favorite symphonies.

I had the pleasure of performing this piece with my college orchestra as a 19 year old kid. When I heard the horns on that last movement for the first time, it was truly the most incredible thing I had heard. This has to be one of my favorites, second to Mahler's Resurrection Symphony. You can't beat the last movement of that piece, either!

The world is a better place because musicians like those we listen to in this video are devoted to transcendental music like this. Thank you to these musicians for whom studying classical music is essential to their well-being and to those who support this orchestra.

The Second was the first Sibelius symphony that I heard, back in the 1960s . This performance is the finest of all! What an ending to a symphony! 'Thrilling' doesn't come near!

This is an excellent rendition of the Sebelius 2nd. Maestro Yan Pascal Tortelier was conducting without a score. He knows every nuance of this symphony, the most masterful work by Sebelius and has possibly performed it as a musician and conducted it as maestro for several orchestras including the BBC, Sao Paulo, Pittsburgh and the Royal Academy of Music. What an accomplished musician he is.

Wow! Was it my stereo, the recording, or was this an inspired performance? I heard things I've never heard before in this work - notes usually hidden behind others. In a couple of spots I noticed the violins really sounded as if it was one player - perfect, crisp timing among them all, at quite a tempo. In fact, a lot of it seemed more clear and crisp than I've noticed in other performances or recordings.

Slowing down the conclusion of the finale that much sort of ruins it for me. I've been really enjoying Segerstram's renditions with the Helsinki orchestra and there's another recording with the Sydney Symphony that's good as well. Of course, Szell with Cleveland in Tokyo is the gold standard. This orchestra and conductor don't overblow the final brass passages which I like - Segerstram manages the finale in this regard very well combining a blossoming, restrained and noble effect with power and (not too much) volume. Check out the Segerstram performances here on KZbin for another take that isn't slowed to a halt at the end, but still majestic.
