Bruckner and Sibelius are the greatest symphonists after Beethoven and the wonderful Sixth is arguably Sibelius's finest composition. Completely original and with an unsurpassed beauty and fluency. The marvellous coda is chilling in its detachment. Segerstam's interpretation is slow but he captures so much of the inner detail.

Sibelius sixth symphony - a wonderful work which seems the least often played. Reportedly it was the composer’s favourite of his symphonies. I really enjoyed this performance by this Finnish orchestra - beautiful playing and conducting.

I particularly like the slower tempo for the finale, makes you sit back and reflect on the symphony as a whole instead of rushing through. Spring water eventually reaches a lake, or even an ocean...

Sibelius is grossly underestimated. He wasn't just a composer, he was an architect of greatest musical forms, like Beethoven and Brahms.

For me, the most wonderful, sincere, deeply moving and personal of all of the Sibelius symphonies. Leaves me in tears. Beautifully played here in its home environment. Somehow the music to the Snowman animated cartoon film takes something of its mood and sound world.

Excellent. My favorite Sibelius Symphony, hands-down (actually, #4 is close). LOVE the way Segerstam slows down at 7:24 for the beautiful central 1st-mvt climax; the gorgeous major 7th chords are all the more prominent. But, as always with Sibelius' best music, you soon find yourself in a cold, remote, desolate place, without realizing how you got there. (Leif leaves the horns stranded at 9:12..right at their close-up! But they entered correctly, "sneaking in", which was actually quite effective). LR

Thankyou, this all is boring me. Too healthy. It feels like Sibelius is writing 19thcentury moods like early20th centuryBritish composers with a few insights. The 2WorldWars don't appear except indirectly in 5th symphony.

Trying to think of another symphony that opens so contemplatively. I think of this as the detox symphony : I listen to cleanse my ear of all the junk it hears. No wonder its composer described it as pure spring water.

This is the lowest rated of Sibelius symphonies. I find this regrettable. So many nice themes in this, and what a joy to listen to! I associate to a working day, it begins with the morning light in the first movement and people go out to their working day. During this day many things happen, both joyful and more serious. It is as near a patoral Sibelius comes! And the most joyful symphonie he wrote.

Not sure it is the "lowest rated", it is just ignored by too many. Doesn`t end loud, audiences have to really listen, no big tune but to the Sibelius lover it is pure gold.

In fact, the sixth symphony does have something to do with the seasons. The composer himself said that the sixth always reminded him of the smell of first snow. And when it is Sibelius who says that, it is quite deep.
