I remember watching the premiere episode with my dad, I was seventeen and when I asked him if he'd watch with me, he said if I was going to stay home on a Saturday night to watch something that he would definitely watch with me!! My mom was reading in the bedroom and came out to watch with us because she wanted to see what the heck we were laughing at!! What a great memory for me that's for sure!! Thanks SNL for having this teenager stay home to watch the wonderful premiere of your show with her parents!!❤

This is a wonderful mental picture to imagine! Both my parents are gone now and they were both pretty big sticks in the mud. LOL. But my oldest brother made up for it. He is twelve years older and was always a source of fun for me. He loved SNL and let me stay up and watch it at his house. ❤

The song she sang, “I Happen to Like New York,” is a great old Cole Porter song from the 1920s. It has a lot funny and smart and occasionally moving lyrics that she could have sang, but she stuck to the first verse or so.

I’ve never heard this one but pegged it as Cole Porter pretty quickly, as it reminded me of “Take Me Back to Manhattan.” I’ll have to look it up and see if it, too, was used in a musical. Thanks for the info.

I saw Jean Smart perform just a couple of months before that SNL premiere episode we both watched. I was 13. She’s only ten years older than me but she seemed much older when playing the mother Mary in Long Day’s Journey into Night at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, where I went in the summer of 1975 with my older sister. I still remember her performance, which made a huge impression upon me since my mother also had mental health issues. Her performance made me fall in love with theater. But what’s even more amazing is that the youngest of her character’s two sons in the play, Edmund, was portrayed by William Hurt, who was IRL a year older than her! Anyway I’ve been following her career for the last 49 years and it’s so great to see her having such success in her 70s. Such an amazing talent.

To me, she's Pickles (the functional alcoholic mom who gave up her posh life in the Hills to marry Bob Oblong [the limbless dad voiced by SNL alum Will Ferrell]) from "The Oblongs" (which most people know as an Adult Swim show, even though it was one of those animated sitcoms on The WB network that got canceled as quickly as it premiered. In Australia, it was canceled 15 minutes into its first episode due to viewer complaints over content, just like what happened to "Turn-On").

While always being successful (I remember her from "Designing Women", long, long ago) it seems to me that she was one of those actors about whom people would say, "Oh, I really like her! What's her name?" Household name now. In an industry which consists almost entirely of cynical, depressing tales, Jean Smart's story is a nice one: Peak success in her 70s.
