2:52 Most people won't understand the "ice" reference. In those days, there were "ice men" who would deliver ice on a weekly basis in giant blocks for the ice box (the old style refrigerators). So, this line implies that Mrs Taylor is having an affair with the ice man.
@shellyfox8635 ай бұрын
Electric refrigerators were in every home and had been for a long time by the the time this song references. They entered mass production in 1918 and were pretty much in every home by the 30's. I think the phrase use a lot of ice is in reference to drinking alone. Whisky or some other hard liquor on the rocks sort of thing. Perhaps with the mailman. :)

Back in the day when songs had to be 3 minutes or less to get air play the songwriters had to be able to set a stage, tell a story, and wrap it up with precision. Major props to the songwriters of these hits! Too many to mention but Tom T. Hall was one of the best

My Dad was a chief of police here in Texas when this song was huge. He was patrolling one night and saw a tour bus behind a laundry that was supposed to be closed for the night so, he went in and Jeanie C. Riley was sitting on a washing Machine and her band was there. They were washing cloths. He talked to her until the wee hours of the Morning. I still have the picture she signed for him.

Harper Valley PTA was written by Tom T. Hall, who is known as The Storyteller.. he wrote some brilliant songs in his career...Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine is a classic.. you like stories, you might love this one. My favorite is The Year Clayton Delaney Died. Oh, and I Washed My Face in the Morning Dew.. that one is as true today as when it was inked in the early 60s. You can't miss with Tom T. Hall.

@@abracadabra3033 it was a movie and a TV show. I think it was called Return to Harper Valley, it was in the 70’s. But this was small town life. Everybody knew everybody’s business. My momma was a single mom at the time of 7 children. I was the baby. She had to escape a violent alcoholic situation with my daddy. My teachers referred to me as the girl without a father in first grade. The other kids laughed. Divorced parents weren’t heard of like today. But my sweet little Christian momma went to the school and told that bit*h off. Miss you momma. 😢♥️
