it is about a woman that was harassed (told how to raise her daughter) by the Parent Teacher Association. She was a single mom, who was doing the best she could do, and was a good mother. The P.T.A. was a bunch of hypocrites. This happens a lot in real life even now days

I’m here because this song was written by my friend, Tom T. Hall. Nice to see someone reacting to one of his songs. Country music has taken a different direction in recent years and this song and other classics like it seem to be getting forgotten. Thanks for reacting to this song. 👍🏼

I'm 58 years old. I've been listening to Tom T Hall since I was a kid! "The Year Clayton Delaney Died" "Old Dogs Children and Watermelon Wine" "Week In a County Jail". One of the greatest musical storytellers of all time. Tell him we love him and he is appreciated.

She snuck the bottle (and herself) into his baggage and snuck into his life. Do the terms "master bedroom" and "master bathroom" cause you distress? I ask because some groups want the word removed from the English language. I guess it will become the "M" word.

childhood memories! Cool - after Mom threw my step-father out she got a job as a cocktail waitress in the days of hot pants and short skirts. All the church folks looked down on her for working in hot pants and serving drinks. I was proud of her for keeping us alive.

What ever it takes, got to feed the kids the deadbeat dads didn't, Wait did that just get deep? lol, My mom worked two full time job's and a part-time job on her days off, we didn't live in the best neighbors, but we were clean and fed, You do what you can with what you can, kid's come first!

For the few that don't know, Peyton Place was a movie about hidden secrets and scandals in a small town called Peyton Place. It was turned in to the first night time soap opera on TV.

The way I heard it is that Jeannie C Riley asked Tom T Hall to write her a song similar to Ode To Billy Joe. He wrote an entire album on the theme and they're all good songs in my opinion. But Tom T Hall is one of my favorite songwriters.

In some ways I almost think "Sippin Shirley Thompson", "Mr. Harper" and "Widow Jones" are better songs than Harper Valley PTA itself, even if of course they get a completely diffrent tone if you listen to them along with the introduction song that introduces these characters and their personalities.

My grandma got my sister a record player with the 45 of this song when she was 7, I was 3 and we listened to it all the time. I can remember my childhood from that age. I love different types of music but I'm so thankful my dad listened to country, the good old days.

I wanted a pair, but I have always had heavy ankles (not cankles, but close enough) and my legs were chunky. I was so sad. I REALLY wanted those boots. I've never been able to wear tall boots.

Had the pleasure of seeing her perform in person. She signed a photo for my father, who loved her music. He had just suffered a stroke a few months before and it really helped his spirit. She was a very nice lady.

I love your reaction and understanding of the song. If I may elaborate little further. I was a young adult when this song was popular, and believe me, it was also a very strong feminist statement for the time. Women who came of age in the 60's were pioneers in asserting the right of every woman to live life on their own terms. Yep, it was a rebellion against patriarchy.

this song was just how my own momma was, single & raising three girls in a very small town..........she had *no* problem remindin' snooty towns folk who they were, and puttin' them in their place, which was most certainly not above her.................she was a little spitfire. lol
