it is about a woman that was harassed (told how to raise her daughter) by the Parent Teacher Association. She was a single mom, who was doing the best she could do, and was a good mother. The P.T.A. was a bunch of hypocrites. This happens a lot in real life even now days

I’m here because this song was written by my friend, Tom T. Hall. Nice to see someone reacting to one of his songs. Country music has taken a different direction in recent years and this song and other classics like it seem to be getting forgotten. Thanks for reacting to this song. 👍🏼

She snuck the bottle (and herself) into his baggage and snuck into his life. Do the terms "master bedroom" and "master bathroom" cause you distress? I ask because some groups want the word removed from the English language. I guess it will become the "M" word.

childhood memories! Cool - after Mom threw my step-father out she got a job as a cocktail waitress in the days of hot pants and short skirts. All the church folks looked down on her for working in hot pants and serving drinks. I was proud of her for keeping us alive.

The way I heard it is that Jeannie C Riley asked Tom T Hall to write her a song similar to Ode To Billy Joe. He wrote an entire album on the theme and they're all good songs in my opinion. But Tom T Hall is one of my favorite songwriters.

In some ways I almost think "Sippin Shirley Thompson", "Mr. Harper" and "Widow Jones" are better songs than Harper Valley PTA itself, even if of course they get a completely diffrent tone if you listen to them along with the introduction song that introduces these characters and their personalities.

My grandma got my sister a record player with the 45 of this song when she was 7, I was 3 and we listened to it all the time. I can remember my childhood from that age. I love different types of music but I'm so thankful my dad listened to country, the good old days.

Had the pleasure of seeing her perform in person. She signed a photo for my father, who loved her music. He had just suffered a stroke a few months before and it really helped his spirit. She was a very nice lady.

I was a young adult when this song was popular, and believe me, it was also a very strong feminist statement for the time. Women who came of age in the 60's were pioneers in asserting the right of every woman to live life on their own terms. Yep, it was a rebellion against patriarchy.
