Keeping in mind that I will always be dressed for the environment with rain gear if needed, and will always have a level of EDC on me at all times, I had a think about the first 5 items that I might take in a Bug Out situation. IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is a conceptual excercise only and in no represents the limit to the equipment you should carry. It is purely a conceptual way of thinking about what may be important to YOU in YOUR environment and complimenting YOUR skill levels.

Those are the bare essentials for a day hike, hunting, back country excursion etc. If you get lost, injured, etc you must be prepared to spend a few nights out in the woods until you are rescued. Anyone with any skill set can use these items and survive. Thank You. I just subscribed.

I totally agree with your decision on taking the hatchet over the knife. Hatchets are just so much more versatile than knives, and you can do almost anything you can do with a knife by choking up on the handle. The versatility is worth the extra weight. Ideally I would have a good fixed blade AND a hatchet, just because it's easier to do finer tasks with a knife, but if I had to choose the hatchet definitely wins.

Too cumbersome to do fine tasks and too small and light to chop for me. Yeah, i'd bet it's good for batoning... but I only baton thin kindling with my BK16, everything else I split with my hatchet. And I don't like the clip point.

I really like how you weigh several similar pieces of kit against each other, like the saw, hatchet and knife, and then explain why the one you chose is best for you. well done.

Great choice on that hatchet alone. Many people survived by chopping a hole through their roof thereby allowing for fresh air, signaling, drying wet clothes, collection of run off rain water, & shelter from the hot sun for days! Rescue helicopter crews learned quickly to spot rooftops with holes when water was still up to the second story of homes. So hatchet for the win!

I very much enjoy(ed) this discussion/presentation. There were questions I had in my mind here and there... but eventually dismissed them as I further grasped what is being said here and what this video is attempting to have us consider. Which if I understand... what is the basic of the basics that we need in the event we are left with very little or have to go quick. Otherwise, sure... there are other things that can be added to this and other kits that can be 'ready to go' as well. Odds are as time goes by we probably will gather extra items along the way once the actual needs are assessed. Even though most 'survival' videos and kits seem to focus on being in some type of forested / nature type environment... I see these items working pretty much in an urban type situation just as well. What I also appreciate here is again, the simplicity of the idea of "what do you 'really' need...?" So many people, myself included, just have so much stuff... for me there are no local close forests. So, I possibly have gone too heavy on first aid type things... and others seem to have so much redundancy. I have seen people with kits with matches, and a flint striker, and a lighter, and quick tinder... (and more than one of each)... I guess some of that could be used to barter with... But, that leads me to the real thing of importance... which is reflected in your choices and why you made them... More important than anything is actually practicing and doing and trying out these things. I think for so many of us (speaking of myself) this is all just theory. We watch a few TV shows... we watch a bunch of videos... we see others start fires a dozen different ways... we watch how to make dozens of different shelters... but what good does all that do if we have a full pack of stuff but no real world experience? I had to laugh at myself the first time I tried to use a flint rod (granted a very poorly made rod). The rod had some type of coating on it that made first strikes useless. I had to go thru so much effort to even get a small spark. That is when I started to realize the error in my ways. So, it is nice to see something like this... Something where a statement is made, well I have confidence in my ability to do xyz (based on experience) and so I will take items 1,2,3,4 with me because I know I can accomplish much of what I need with just those things. Where as someone like myself.. I would have to probably have a shopping cart full of stuff. Anyway... thanks again.

@jediknightofthewoods
@jediknightofthewoods 9 жыл бұрын
Rockunstank True, it was intended that I strictly stayed with 5 items. Another thing they do is count a whole cook kit with nesting bottle, mug, pouch, stove, spoon, coffee sachets etc as 'one' item as it all fits in one pouch! Im not suggsting that it would be ideal to go out with just 5 items at all, but if for some random, crazy turn of events, this is what I would hypothetically go for. Cheers and all the best!

Great vid! I like the idea of a 5 piece kit as opposed to a 10 piece kit, because it really shows what our priorities are. For the guys complaining, obviously when we go out everyone carries much more gear, this is just to evaluate what really matters. I've seen many guys carry 4 knives with them(main blade ,backup blade, small neck knife, and 1 in the multi-tool) and nobody calls them crazy.

Thank you for your time and "EXPERTISE". You covered alot of ground and clearly explained why you chose these items. For people who are new to this type of thing, you clearly made the "dummies" more prepared. I would definitely throw in some fishing line just because it would come in handy. It is not taking up any extra space and who said that your Survival BugOut kit has to be limited to 5. Especially the kit you have presented. Just my opinion. You definitely ROCK.

Say Heah M8, this video caught my attention when it came out again on my KZbin. I recently put together a 5 piece cutting implement set. I wanted to see how tactical military knives would fair in the bush. I put together the Recon Tanto with a Seal Pup Elite abd a BK-14 as a neck knife. I took a Wicked Tough Saw and my Estwing Double Bit Hatchet and put together this set.. I was more than pleasantly impressed, it functioned beautifully. A bit much, but this kit I put together for longer trios and I can pick and choose from it on shorter trips even to just go out and have cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato everything taste better on a open fire. But on a longer trio, I feel I have all my bases covered and I can accomplish everything I need to do short of building a cabin. Nice to see this video again, I really enjoyed it.

Intresting choices wilderness survival. Me personally would choose: 1) poncho - Instant shelter, drinking water catcher rain/solar distillation, water proof clothing, bag for carrying things, canoe, hammock, etc. . . (Use branches & leaves/moss/bark to insulate from ground?) 2) steel bottle - carry river water/water collection, boil drinking water, cook food, carry small food e.g berries, tree sap collection, etc.... 3) fire steel - may swap for something that has at least 3 uses instead of the 1 use. (Make fire bow? & dried fungi to carry fire ember for hours for portable fire starter) 4) para cord - make: tools, snares/catching/trapping, shelter, rope, weapons, wick for oil/animal fat lamp, inside strands use for fishing lines/net, kindling fire in wet conditions, etc ...... 5) full tang knife - making other tools/weapons/traps, food preparation skinning/gutting, thin slices of flesh for smoking meat over a fire, burn less calories using it/carrying, make into a spear/pickaxe, sharper/easier to sharpen in the field, faster/agile/safer detail finer uses, ect .... (use a good log to hit/hammer with? Sappling trees easy to cut with gd knife, standing dead wood easy to obtain no need for axe or make a stone axe? ) Knowledge is the key that can unlock the will to live, you could have a truck full of equipment but with out will power your chances dwindle. Water, food, shelter in any order depending on situation. I believe it's important to adapt & have things that have more than 3 uses to better your surival rate. The knife is the most important/useful out of the 5 items then use survival knowledge to create/make/adapt with the others. Happy knowledge hunting the inner cave man/woman is in all of us. Pop quiz how many ways do you know to purify/ obtaining water for drinking? E.g sea water, dessert, polluted/waste, etc .......?

I agree with your choice with the thermos. I love cooking in a Thermos (rice - stew - porridge - veggies - etc. ) when I go fishing, I put the boiled watere in the thermos, with my rice, 2 hours of good fishing, and voila..I got fish and rice !! :-)) good times. Bravo

Thank you! its certainly a tool of choice for me. I tenc to go with a similar 'Nessmuk' style arrangement with the hatchet (single bit rather than double bit) a Mora knife or the Condor bushlore regular size, and my Victorinox Outrider for the modern take on the folder. I will usually add a larger folding saw as well most trips.

you have saved my life! if i have to sprint away from my burning cabin, these are exactly what i hope to have handy. although i think the wool blanket is too heavy. for the weight i could carry a mylar 'emergency blanket' or 4 (they're only $3) maybe even throw in a polyester bedsheet. in another video, the commenter had his hatchet handle just attaching with friction. (the handle is flared on the top end) which makes it smaller to pack & the head alone makes a good slice tool.

Yay for wool. I've watched quite a few vids about gear and BOBs comparing my and my load-out and such. You are one of the very few who understand wool as the king choice in materials to choose, just to add about it keeping you warm even when wet. It's also fire retardant, mildew resistant and easily repairable. Good on you man.

I'd take:- 1) Hammock - it hardly ever rains and sleeping on the ground the insects will eat you alive 2) Water carrier - it's hot here, sometimes 40-50C hot - I'd take a Camelbak 3) Cutting - home forged W-2 camp knife 4) Fire - mixed blessing because of wildfire risk, but three disposable lighters anyway 5) Cordage - same as you First 4 items completely different due to enviroment ( mostly ) and personal preference :-) Great video anyway mate - liked and subscribed..

A well thought out evaluation of five items! Another use for the firesteel and hatchet is a source of light, I have hiked miles in pitch dark with the flint spark of a lighter. The experience is unique in that the mind gets a flash picture of what's ahead, which you then proceed through in the dark. I would take a one gallon metal can with a metal screw top in place of the bottle, snuggling up to a gallon of boiling hot water in a wet blanket on a cold damp night is a very sweet thing.

No worries thanks for responding. Dont matter whether we are able bodied, partially disabled or fully diabled, we are all guilty of carrying too much baggage, me too! Over time I add bits back in to my bag again and then once a year I go through my pack and strip it right back again, we all get bits of kit through the year that just isnt necessary. Yeah I have tons of those bracelets laying around. Like you I tend to make them for lanyards and carry handles etc, which is a great use for them. I agree with all of your choices for a bare bones minimalist survival situation. If I had just those items, I'd be okay. I like to carry more if I can. A nesting cup for the bottle wouldn't take up much space. The Mora is lightweight, so I'd pack it as companion to the axe. Two large lawn leaf bags don't take up much space either and can be used for water catchment and wind break. I'd bring the lighter with the ferro rod. Like Dave Canterbury says. "Two is one. One is none." However, in my humble opinion the paracord is enough cordage. Hey, thank you for sharing! I'll subscribe and I look forward to more videos!

Excellent decision process. I concur with your choices 100%. By the way, your fire starting flint steel IS a multi-use tool. It gives you fire, which we all know is a huge multi-use tool. So, just had to add that bit. Also, please apply water repellent to your blanket before packing into your sack and you also have multi uses for it also.

1/wool blanket, coupled with a good shelter and fire will enable you do endure the coldest of weather, keep you dry and warm excellent choice. 2/ ss container, is so durable can carry water and most importantly boil it excellent choice 3/hatchet/tomahawk, is one off the best allround survival tool besides all the cutting it is really good for killing game, another excellent choice 4/ firesteel, is a no-brainer no moving parts reliable easy way to have fire 5/ Paracord, very versatile item with so many uses including traps, fishing, shelter building etc etc really great list and the same items I would choice , although I would cheat and throw in my large bcb heavily modified survival tin instead of the firesteel( because amonst other things it has a firesteel, small knife etc etc but as I said that would be cheating but when it comes to survival cheating is the name of the game. The axe for me has to be right up there. Cordage is an aid to shelter building but it also has many more uses for repairs etc. The single walled Guyot designs bottle is perhaps the single best portable, bomb proof portable vessle that I have come across for boiling, cooking and as an all rounder. Its an interesting discussion exercise and many people have made different decisions on the way they would do things, which is what I hoped this would pomote, thanks for taking the time!

I carry a fare amount of items with me every day, like my multi tool, my little trusty torch, and some writing and first aid stuff, and if I had to get out fast I would probably choose the same items as you, because they would definitely complement the rest of my EDC. The biggest thing we should carry is also the lightest, knowledge. This video is going in my favourites right now.

Good Vid. Covering, Container, Cutter, Combuster, Cordage... The 5 C's of Survivability... There is a saying that goes like this, "Two is One, and One is None." Redundancy is paramount to the idea of enduring unforeseen contingencies. If I were to add to this already sublime video's list, it would be to "double" the above tools. Covering: High Quality Wool Blanket + 3m x 3m Waxed Duck Cloth Tarp Container: 64oz Kleen Kanteen + 32oz Vargo Stainless BOT Cutter: Axe + Leatherman Charge Combuster: Large Fire Steel + Large Magnesium Rod Cordage: 100m 550 Paracord + 500m 50lb kevlar fishing line

Absolutely a person with a different skill set, or in a different environment would choose something else. Someone in South American for example wouldnt dream of having 5 essential items that didnt include a machete instead of a hatchet. Also they may have less need for a blanket as its warm all year round but wouldnt dream of being anywhere without a big tarp as it rains every day. Cheers and all the best!

I agree with your choice of hatchet. My Gerber gator hatchet comes with me for long hikes and camping trips. Some people like big knives for that purpose but you can't beat a hatchet for its chopping power and I think it's worth the weight. Also it's very strong and intended for chopping wood while other knives wouldn't be able to. Also I keep mine very sharp as well so finer work would be possible.

My thoughts are simple. Any hatchet is better than no hatchet, same as the small folder you have in your pocket in an emergency is better than the fixed blade you left at home. I do agree completely that the designs and practicality of a wooden handled hatchet would be my preference over a composite material Gerber or Fiskars every day of the week. There is a reason why accomplished woodsmen use wooden handled tools and make the handles themselves. Cheers!

I take your point entirely about where you live in Ontario, and thats also IMHO one of the main concepts of developing successful survival/bushcraft skills in that they have to be relevant to your area. Where I live in the UK there are squirrels, rabbit and pigeon everywhere you look. Fishing would be an option but for me only in major rivers. Unfortunately litter in the form of aluminium drinks cans can be found in lots of places, but flint in the Chiltern Hills is all over the place. Cheers!

Your choices are well thought out. Especially knowing where you live and the needs you'll have there. And your right about your water (though I would put some coffee filters inside the bottle so you can filter out large particles before boiling).. then boil for a minute. To be perfectly honest, my bottle is a wide mouth aluminum bottle with iodine and chlorine tabs inside, plus 10 coffee filters (all of the items inside purchased for $5.25 USD, and adding a negligable ammount of weight).

fantastic video, i agree with you 100% on the hatchet, a good quality well maintained hatchet can do everything a knife can do and more. the hatchet will be far more robust. most importantly there in Britain and here in Canada you often have to use dead standing wood because it's the only thing that's dry, a knife is never going to do that for you.

Sure do! I rate the Mora very highly, and the Husqvarna just as much as any of the more 'fashionable' bushcraft style hatchets. Both keep an edge exceptionally well, and I love using the hatchet for carving etc. Beautuiful tools.

Great video thank you! You obviously know what you are talking about, and I thank you for the boost of self confidence in my own thinking, because I have essentially the same items in a pack for quick use. Only difference is instead of the cord, I have clothesline simply because I have a lot of it, and I already had it. I do however plan on replacing it soon.

I like your overall choices but I would only change 2 things. 1. for fire I would use a fire piston instead of the key chain flint striker thingy only because I find fire pistons easier to use. 2. for cordage I would have went with the bankline instead of the 550 paracord. but those would just be how I would personally doing things. Great video keep up the good work :)

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! There are a couple things in your video I'd like to emphasize; "My environment" and "My skill set". The differences between your kit and mine are personal preferences only. I'd feel well equipped with your kit. Well done, sir!

And a toolkit...first time out on my dirt bike in the mountains the rear brake seized up solid ( I hadn't checked it over since the previous owner rebuilt it ) - The temperature is 45C, I have no water and I'm wearing moto-X boots that I can't walk in. I do have a collection of Snap On tools worth maybe £5k but they are all back at the farm...not even a knife. Great job, 'Mr Preparedness' :-))) I got home eventually by hitting the brake linkage with a rock...

good on ya brother. this display shows a mastery of K.I.S.S. which i think so many "preppers" completely miss the boat on. I would add that a rubbish bin liner adds almost no weight, can provide an emergency insulating layer [especially with leaves/natural material], and works well to gather moisture for hydration.

I'm actually very impressed, sir! Out of the plethera of this sort of video, I am very pleased to have stumbled on your channel, definately subscribing. I was very plesently surprised by your choices here, but I loved them - very well thought out! I've been recently reevaluating my own kit, and wanted to do a little research to that end, and your ideas mached my own nearly word for word. And stick with the axe. Your familiarity and it's versitality s the key, I agree with you whole-heartedly.

Excellent video!! I agree with your choices. Those 5 items with proper knowledge, should get you thru for quite a long time. I always carry my SOG Flash 2, a flashlight, peanut lighter, and small Leatherman, anyway. Nicely done, and thank-you for the ideas...

Thanks for the vid! I totally agree with your choices I know a lot of people would take a knife over a hatchet but you nailed it on the head why to take the hatchet, alot more uses and more durable and a easy fix if needed. And I would also take the wool blanket over a tarp as well exactly for the reasons you touch on! great job thank you hope to see more...take care!........Reaper

It is all about your choice and my choice!! Thats what its all about!! What are THE BEST choices? best for WHAT? Best in whose hands? Best in what environment? how can I possibly pick a BEST choice when there simply isnt one! My 'Crush' on my hatchet is based on what I have used the most in the past, I have never owned a 10 inch thick chopping knife, so what I claim is my experience with the hatchet will outperform very little experience in MY hands of a large chopping knife.

...someone else who doesnt read the notes section AT ALL before watching! Nice one! staying dry is no problem when I dress for MY environment, which happens to be England and usually wet so I PREPARE for it with waterproofs! wool keeps 90% insulation when wet!! You dont know my area, I do, and I know there are lots of tunnels and disused buildings = shelter! Oh and you also have absolutely no idea what I can do with a hatchet! lol! but thanks for watching without reading the notes!

i really have to say you made a great kit and your logic behind it is to dead on + it really show how different we all think both as a person ore where we are from and i think your kit reflect how we here in Europe (Denmark for me ) think, it really show the difference between the US and Europe, so thanks for sharing

Great video, your choices are very similar to ones many people would choose. If you had a pouch to hold that water bottle with the SS cup nested over it then I would consider all that one tool, just like a canteen and canteen cup. No one in their right mind would willingly limit themself to 5 items in order to survive for any length of time, unless they are getting paid for it, but these challenges do make you think about how knowledge and basic tools will ensure survival.

Hopefully you are not going to leave the house naked so take the poncho it is a small waterproof house and you can use it on the run. Huntsman swiss army knife more tools you can find wood on the ground bugging out you probably don't want a fire you would get caught. Your bug out kit is not meant to be a long time solution it is just to get you to a safe place. Having your mil. spec. parachute cord gives you many options good choice. Good video, hope we never need to bug out.

Great video! lots of good quality ideas. I would also include the tarp and wrap it with the blanket. Not going to take any more space and I really don't like getting wet. In Canada a mosquito net is also very packable and a must from spring to fall!

Excellent choices but personally I'd take the bankline. Just my personal choice, but at 160 lb breaking strain It'll do as a ridgeline ... in fact most of the things you'd "normally" use 550 lb paracord for - but you can carry far more length for the volume. It also splits down into three very strong threads (which I can't break), each more than capable of binding shelter branches together, as unbreakable sewing thread, fishing with, making into snares, traplines, trotlines ... you name it.

Good video and very sound advice indeed. I would just change two items. I would replace the axe with a Becker BK9 knife. This beast will do the cross-over tasks between knife and axe with ease. It is lighter and more versatile. Secondly, I would change your water bottle to a military style canteen. You can use the bottom canteen to boil water; imperative in a survival situation and still have a spare water collection device available to pour over and/or collect more water. IMHO. Keep up the good posts Sir.

In my opinion an axe is a better tool to have than a knife. Not only do you have a sharp blade for slicing and cutting but you also have a hammer, and a weighted wedge for chopping with much more ease than a knife. While the knife is the lighter option, many lightweight hatchets such as the fiskars x7 provide great versatility.

Thanks again for commenting! In my environment where I am in a fairly rural part of England, and am surrounded everywhere by large and small patches of woodland, and where options for shelter from the elements are numerous in the form of stables, bridges, underpasses, outbuildings, barns etc, my next priority IMHO is fire for morale, warmth, making water safe to drink, cooking, drying clothes etc, so wood processing is critical, and lots of it, more than a knife could cope with, Cheers!

Extremely well thought out video. You should start a school for common sense! Each item was very well thought out. Would prefer to carry these five, than 90lbs of gear. Don't over think your bug out bag. Add to this for extreme measures, but these are the five basics for self preservation. Excellent video!

Jedi, Thank you for the vid sir. This info will go great with my cqc skills. Thanks for adding the piece on water purification. I know now to boil whenever possible and save the filter and tablets for when fire isn't tacticly sound.

I live in Arizona so that is why I said that...also sometimes it would be good to get water without building a fire every time. You could loose your fire starter and then you would be in a bad situation...however if your in a area that rains a lot then your good. Sometimes we go a very long time without rain so for me in my area it is a must. One last thing is that I would quickly set up a permanent base somewhere and the water filtration would be my number one priority.
