Awesome! Funny little story. When I was a kid (late 70's), we went on a week-long geology field trip. One place we went to was Darwin's Wash somewhere around Owens valley. The geology teacher accidentally drove past Darwin's wash for quite some time. It wasn't until the Airforce warning signs indicating that we were in a bombing range that he realized we should turn around. Lol! Jets screaming over etc. Haha!

You're right about fear. The thing that works for me is risk assessment - where every adverse condition/circumstance add one more layer of risk until it becomes too hazardous to go on. That's kept me above the turf through 40 years of outdoors action sports. You just be you, but be careful too.

You could get a small travel trailer, off road type. A lot of people do that and either turn their Jeep into storage or keep your Jeep a sleeper in the back and put all your stuff into the travel trailer.

That lake screams brain amoebas! Also I'm surprised how many people don't realize northern travel isn't your first rodeo. The pan am thing scares me but how bout this alternative. Ship the jeep to Europe and do a tour there. I moved to Sweden from Michigan and because of that got to see some of Europe and it's been great.

I've been working on getting ready to do the PanAm hwy as well. Looking at adding a second tank instead of a better mpg vehicle. Lol Also keeping an eye on vehicles I can buy in South America instead of dealing with shipping around the Darien Gap. A short trip into Mexico might help temper those fears about the language barrier. I'll be watching no matter what you do.

That would be an awesome road trip to do the pan american highway. I've backpacked from Colombia through to Bariloche in Chile, but it would have been incredible to have had my own transport! Currently about to build a small van to drive around the Scottish highlands as a warm up for longer European trips. So itchy to get on the road for a longer stretch, the 9-5 life doesn't suit me anymore!

20mpg and less is about the norm for all the cars you can overland in comfortably. You could try something like a Mazda CX-5 with awd, but you are still at like 26mpg at best and you will be spending 10-15k to get it. You can save money and have a nicer ride by just getting an older 80s SUV like a ramcharger or van with a quigley conversion.
