Thanks for checking in guys! FYI. According to the 2001 XJ Factory Service Manual a healthy 4.0 engine should have compression ranging from 120psi to 150psi and all cylinders should be within 30psi of one a other 👍

So I just did a compression test on my 2000 xj and got 1: 170 2: 150 3:150 4:175 5:160 6:160. The psi is a little high but they all are within 30 of each other. Mine sounds very similar to that knocky one you showed in this video. I have removed to oil pan to inspect the underside of the motor and taken the head off twice and found no damage. The first time I took the head off I had 2 messed up lifters so I changed all the lifters, push rods, valves and their associated hardware. It ran great for maybe 2 weeks then started knocking and running shitty again. I removed the head the second time to double check I didn’t mess something up. Also there are no CEL codes and I have ruled out the coil by swapping a few coils in. The motor has 130k on it. I am stumped.

@@iphone777 fwiw, when you said knocking that sounds like what I hear in my 4.0 L. After some research I found a video that the creator found PISTON SLAP was the cause to make that sound. It's here on KZbin somewhere. He had a friend mechanic re-hone one of the cylinders. And I believe he placed the piston and rings as well on that cylinder. It solved his issue.

My 2004 Jeep wj 4.0l compression readings from 173 to 180. Is that normal for this engine with 145k miles? I don't think so. Rough idle but runs great. I've replaced all the sensors 2 times I mean everything even the crank sensor. No vacuum leaks. Injectors are the 3rd set. Coil pack are the 3rd set. I tried to dicarbonate the engine too. I was thinking to fuel up with a 91 octane fuel to see the different. Please let me know if you have any suggestions!

we've been thinking about driving our XJ back to Missouri to visit family and this is one of the things I want to do before I set off on that long journey. I bought it off a kid in Deer Park who overheated it in the past and had to have the head gasket replaced, so I've always worried about overall engine health since learning that. Your video and tester recommendation will help me out a lot when I finally get around to testing myself!

I love the coil rail on the WJ and later XJs, but why couldn't we get it as an individual pack setup?! One pack goes and you have to replace the whole thing. Also makes it very difficult to diagnose if a pack is causing a misfire as you cannot swap between cylinders. This has plagued me on a number of WJs
@ProjectDanH4 жыл бұрын
very very true Doug! I think space was the biggest concern consider they're is only 3 pack.. they had to double up I guess... check this beast out.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4jGi4CgdpyNnbM now that's a cool pack rail!

hey dan, you should look into the k suspension viper coil upgraded for the 97-01 XJ's. i currently have it in my 2000, best upgrade ever, during the summer i was having lots of problems with the stock coil pack having hard misfire from heat, similar to fuel rail heat soak, it mounts a dodge viper coil and bracket to your coolant reservoir and has 6 plug wires running to your spark plugs and wire harness adapter, considering you will spend most of beach jeeps days in the sun, this upgrade might be great for you, and for black beauty, stay safe brother!
@ProjectDanH4 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent idea! Sounds like a must have for beach jeep!
@robertgrauman86024 жыл бұрын
I was just about to ask that same question. I had the ksuspension ultimate power upgrade on my 99 XJ, you could barely touch the key and it would start and the windows went up and down faster. Also check out the headlight harness they sell. Well worth the money.
@ProjectDanH4 жыл бұрын
@@robertgrauman8602 thanks Robert! I plan to make my own power upgrade. I find the K suspension kit to have too much extra wire. Still a Great kit tho 💪
@robertgrauman86024 жыл бұрын
@@ProjectDanH not knowing what your plan is this may not apply to you, but the kit is essentially a "big 3 upgrade." Let's you put a bigger alternator on it. I have one of their Kit's on my ZJ and it's perfect with my 160 amp durango alternator. As long as you replace the fusible like with some kind of inline fuse that is the amperage of your alternator plus a certain percentage and round up to the nearest available fuse size, in my case a 250 amp mega fuse, you should be fine. K suspension is basically a small mom and pop shop selling stuff for our Jeep's. They've got great customer service with online tutorials on how to install their products. I like the military style terminals in their power kit, let's you add an accessory quickly without splicing. But then again I've been talking them up since before they got featured on Motorhead Garage. And hey there's another idea for a project for you, alternator upgrade. You might need it with what you're doing with Beach Jeep.
@ProjectDanH4 жыл бұрын
@@robertgrauman8602 yea buddy! I'm definitely doing the 160 amp upgrade. I'm very familiar with K suspension products and I'm not too thrilled with their electrical components. I wasn't crazy about their xj headlight upgrade, the harness was made in China like the Amazon crap and the wires were falling out of the connectors. Also on their power cable upgrade the ear of their positive terminal cracked off. I think they are better suited for metal fabrication.

Just learning... What compression readings would be considered a failed engine candidate? I understand the 75% range, but what if most of the readings were less than 150 for example. Would that be a concern? Is there a 4.0L spec somewhere that should be checked against? Btw, thanks for awesome camera angles, it helps!
