Jeep Cherokee: Windshield Washer Tank Replacement/ Fluid Pump, “Low Washer” Sensor [‘97-’01 XJ]

For models 1987 - 1991, the washer tank was located inside the engine bay, just in front of the brake fluid reservoir. In 1992 - 1996, it was on the passenger side of the engine bay, right behind the fuse box. In 1997 - 2001, it's inside the driver fender, which is the most difficult of the 3 to maintain and replace.
Sometimes, people with older model Jeeps like to swap in this later model tank, as it does clear up a measurable amount of real estate in the engine bay. As for fluid capacity though, they all seem about the same at ~1 gallon.

ok so having done this myself, you don't need to remove the air box to get that lower bolt out, granted it would have been smart to do that but i didn't and struggled for an extra 3 minutes but it is possible XD You also do not need to take the whole liner out out the tire well, i managed to get the whole tank out with just half the liner out, just like you showed for replacing the pumps, though i will admit its a little tight. Congrats on being the real first tutorial video on this though, there are a few others but they don't really make everything super clear and of course as always they skip over some important parts, super concise and well detailed! The rear sprayer on my mom's old 74 Volvo 245DL wagon somehow got spun to where it sprayed directly to the left of the car, at window level. It was great fun at lights in the summertime... I miss that car.

Of all the XJ and MJ repairs ive done over the years ive never removed the washer tank. Collectively we should be able to keep these on the road forever or until the government bans them!

Yeah. My front calipers had the same problem. My problem was warn grooves in the spindle pad slides. Pads would lock into the worn grooves and keep the brakes on. Took a grinder to smooth the worn spots back out then shimmed pads properly. 👍

My 93 xj washer fluid level indicator stopped working a few years ago. Haven’t found any brand new replacements - they may not be available anymore. Apparently newer style tank can be installed on older XJs , with just drilling , and patching in hose extensions , wires, etc. I may eventually do it, but for now will keep trying to get JY one , or even watch for an aftermarket one that can be made to work.

I've been trying to work out a way to relocate the bottle / replace with one from a ZJ. Thinking have to relocate the intake over to the cowl first.. I'm sure others have done this, but haven't found anything on others experiences

Yap they were on sale for $90 a piece. I also worked at Walmart at the time, and my employee discount got me an additional 10% off, so that was a deal I couldn't pass up. Lot of people tend to hate these tires but I haven't had any issues with them at ~30,000 miles and counting

I have noticed that it has leaked in a few places. But not quite sure of where exactly it's leaking.. any help will be greatly appreciated 🙏🏽 I love your jeep cherokee videos, I've learned alot so far! 😊

well with a vague description such as this I can only provide vague recommendations. If it doesn't start, find out why. Change the oil, make sure it has coolant and brake fluid, and take one thing at a time

Surprisingly I have a 1996 with the washer tank in the engine bad but I have the hole in the fender for the 97 plus so idk but I thought it was cool, car is all original btw

Yep there goes 96 being that weird changeover year. People do swap in these newer tanks on the older Jeeps to clear up some engine bay room

Did your jeep have wobble in the front when the caliper failed? That's what happened to mine. I had done a full day of driving, and at the end of it all when I wasn't but 5 minutes from my destination, the front passenger caliper locked up when I tapped the breaks. It got red hot and smoking by the time I was able to pull over to a safe spot. I had to pull the aluminum wheel off because it was starting to discolor. The original caliper had 200K+ on it though, so I suppose it earned it.

Yes, I almost got death wobble as it failed. I believe that's because when the rotor warps, it becomes unbalanced, and that's just like having unbalanced wheels. When I removed the Caliper that wobble went away

I had the same problem with my 1992. It had sat for 8-10 year prior to purchasing it so I redid the brakes. Went for a drive and the passenger brake locked up. Ended up with death wobble a few times. Thought it was wheel alignment, then change tie rod bushings, then the shocks and rotor. When i got the wobble again I changed the rubber brake lines, figured when the brakes were applied the line was not releasing the fluid fast enough to release the brakes. Turns out the lines wear wore out and rotting inside.
